Supercharge Explorer with FileBox eXtender
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on November 27, 2007
Windows only: Freeware application FileBox eXtender adds keyboard-shortcut-accessible favourite folders to any Explorer window (including Save/Open File dialogs) so that you can quickly jump to any frequently used folder from the comfort of your keyboard. Similar to previously mentioned Dirkey, FileBox eXtender streamlines your Explorer work but does so by adding two simple buttons to your Explorer title bar for accessing recent and favourite folders. You can define keyboard shortcuts (I'm using Ctrl-Shift-F) for opening either your recent of favourite folders drop-down, and then jumping to that location is as simple as typing the first letter of your folder you want. FileBox eXtender is freeware, Windows XP and below only. The program can also add pins and title bar roll-up functions if you want it, but I prefer disabling those functions.

Stop these posts! You are ruining my RAM! :P
I just can't see all these useful posts and don't download them, I better upgrade my memory before it's too late.

As a designer I have been using this program for ages, the favorite directory feature kept me sane while exporting images and slices from Fireworks. The most noticeable problem I had with Vista was that it didn't support this utility!

I've used this utility for a while (previously mentioned here) and love it. It makes it easy to navigate to a recently used, or favorite directory from any standard windows dialog.
Although FileBox eXtender doesn't "officially" support Vista, if you go to this post in their forums, they have a beta version that is supposed to work under Vista. (Sorry, I haven't tried it yet.)
And in another post, the author even posts the source code.

I have supercharged my Explorer by replacing it with Total Commander.

@Cidinho: I was just thinking that when I saw this post; man, if I sintalled everything that Lifehacker mentioned my machine would be totally bogged down :P
Is there anyone who installs every single thing they see on LH?

Oh, wow! I missed the option while skimming through the configuration-screens the first time. This program comes with a great setting: you can tick a box to automatically switch file dialogs to the 'Details'-view . Now I am really happy ;-)

Great utility! I just downloaded it and it seems to do everything I want it to. This program actually works in all programs. The previous apps mentioned here lately (like Dirkey and the like) didn't work in my favourite text-editor, notepad++ (since it uses it's own save-dialog).
There are two things I don't really like about the program yet: the buttons are quite ugly, but meh... Who cares? And it seems stuffed with some functionality Adam mentioned. I will probably turn everything off as well.

No offense to the author of this useful utility but it has one of the ugliest complicated interfaces I've seen in a while. I was put off at first glance and actually uninstalled it immediately after trying to accomplish the most basic function which is adding a shortcut to a folder.
I hope future versions will make the interface a little more digestible.

Thank you, Adam, for bringing this great utility - and my utilities blog - to the attention of the multitudes of Lifehacker readers.
Piotrusc: FileBox eXtender can benefit users of some Windows Explorer replacements, too. I use and recommend xplorer2, but still enjoy some FileBox eXtender functions.

thanks to pschroeter for mentioning this software. it rules !
i have been looking for a free alternative to FileEx and this does the trick for me.
I agree the interface is a little complicated, but once you are used to it, it's not that hard.
one thing though : I set the Open/save dialog to always open in detail mode and sort on date modified descending, but the sort doesn't seem to work all the time.

Thanks for mentioning this utility. I am used to similar functionality in the Gnome Nautilus file manager on my Linux desktop, and really missed something similar in Windows Explorer.
