Create Global Folder Bookmarks with Dirkey
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on November 22, 2007
Windows only: Create custom folder bookmarks accessible from your keyboard in any Explorer window or save or open file dialog with freeware system tray application Dirkey. You can set any folder as a bookmark on-the-fly by pressing Ctrl-Alt-0..9, then quickly jump to any of your bookmarks by pressing Ctrl-0..9 for the corresponding bookmark (e.g., if you set a folder as a bookmark with Ctrl-Alt-1, you can access that folder any time by pressing Ctrl-1). Dirkey does the work of previously mentioned applications like FindeXer, PlacesBar Editor, and FinderStyle but offers the quickest access to both creating new bookmarks and jumping to your most frequently used folders. Dirkey is freeware, Windows only.

@invid: The main difference, and what makes it particularly handy, is that it can jump to a folder in the Open/Save dialog, which you can't really accomplish with Launchy.

Isn't this kind of what Launchy does already. I just type in a folder name or a drive and it opens it in the Windows Explorer.

I do this using a simple autohotkey script.

I think I still like the Shortcut in the Windows directory for all my quick access needs - Win+R, Couple Leters, Enter - is actually a pretty quick way to launch apps, projects, files or directories. I use it for all of em... and it doesn't require me to run another app in my tray!

@greasypigstudios, @Adam: Here's my favorite AHK script for this, and it handles the the open/save dialog as well.

FileBox eXtender, a free utility for Windows up to XP (not Vista), performs a similar function and more. It puts buttons in the Explorer and Open and Save windows' title bars for (1) recently used folders and (2) favorite folders that you specify. For more details, see my review in post #16 (15 April 2007) of my utilities blog, [jonathanstoolbar.blogspot.com] . I hope this is helpful.

Exactly!
FileBox eXtender is my all time favourite since I discovered it via your blog Jonathan!
And I can assure you I tried lots of them.
(Previously I preferred AutoHotKey)
