Multi-Client IM on Your Mobile Device with Palringo
Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on November 21, 2007
Windows Mobile and Symbian phones only: Freeware application Palringo brings multi-client chat to your Windows Mobile device or Symbian smartphone. There once was a time when the go-to mobile IM client was a program called Agile Messenger, but ever since it went shareware there's been a gap for freeware IM on a lot of phones. With support for everything from AIM to Google Talk and its own mobile voice chat, it looks like Palringo is filling that gap with aplomb. Palringo is freeware, works on Symbian Series 60 phones and Windows Mobile 2003 and up.

Thanks, another option to try out :)
A couple of my associates and myself have been using OctroTalk (http://www.octro.com/) and that's been working well for us. Your mileage may vary.

So far so good. Lacking many features, but it's new, free, and has a relatively clean interface.

I just installed it on my cell and it requires you to sign in with them first and from there sign into your other services.

I am very excited about this, but I want to know why they need my mobile number to register?

I was pretty excited about this until I realized that the "other" user I wanted to communicate with in Google Talk has to be a registered user of Palringo too AND they have to be using their software, NOT just google talk.
If anyone has seen different - please post more info, but I'm O.U.T.

Whats the benefit of using this over a mobile AIM client from AOL if I just want to use mobile aim?
Does this use more battery then pocket msn, etc?

Is this like other 'web' based IM services? With the addition of VoiceIM.

@-SPK: Once you log into Palringo you can hook up to AIM, YIM, WLM, GTalk/Jabber, ICQ, and some other one I've never used.

Some programs like push email or IM apps use specially formatted text messages (SMS) to do their deeds.
1) Does anyone know if this app does that?
2) If so, that may be the reason they ask for your number.

haven't tried this one, but i use fring on my Motorola Q - connects me to Skype & Google Talk, in addition to the other usual suspects.

As I don't really trust this tool, I'll stay with jimm for ICQ.

@macinjosh: Based on the responsiveness I don't think it's using SMS, but I could be wrong.

@macinjosh: @Troy F.: 100% not using SMS -- my phone (8525/Hermes) dialed up a 3G connection when I signed in. AOL IM also gave me a 'you are signed in at two locations' message which is does not do with push-IMs. also confirmed data over SMS on the company forums.
for anyone with an 8525, this is a wayyyy better option than the crappy hacked AOL IM client or paying wayyy to much for something which should be free! i am very very pleased!
in addition, i signed up for an account & did NOT include my mobile number. no issues what-so-ever. really liking this!

Anyone know if it works with wm6 standard (i.e. non touch-screen)? I can't seem to find any info about that without creating an account.

I know it's not free, but I've been using MunduIM on my Palm Treo 700p (they have a version for Windows based PDAs also) for several months. I've been very pleased with it. It has cross platform conferencing, works with darn near everything; the latest version even works with GTalk. It does not use SMS.

You can download the cab at this link [www.palringo.com] instead of entering in your phone number. I'm so sick of passwords being stored on the servers of third-party companies. Palringo stores your password and login on their servers (confirmed with their support team). I just don't like it.

I've been using OctroTalk for about a week now (just got my first smartphone) It's pretty much the exact same as this. Except it uses your gmail account as the base account. Once logged in, you can add other accounts (aim, msn, yahoo, icq). But seems to be the same. I noticed it recreates your buddy list on its servers, because my Trillian started asking me if user-xxx1234@blah.com could have permission to be added.
All in all, its a decant program, but I can't wait for something that runs solely on the mobile device to come out. ( Trillian Asttra? )

@macinjosh, i don't think so, the app asks you to select an internet connection method.
Running on Nokia N95 (S60):
it ignored my pre existing aim groups, giving me a flat list of hundreds of contacts. actually, it lumped all chat services into one alphabetically sorted contact list with no way to sort, group, or otherwise organize them. since it doesn't filter contacts when you start typing, the only way to move through the list is scrolling with the arrow keys. i would say this version is not usable.

@macinjosh: No, this app will connect through your data connection only. No idea why they would collect your phone number though.

My recommendation would be to buy Mundu IM. It is only $11 bucks. And yes, this is a one time charge. It is compatible with all the main IMs and Jabber. Has a great User Interface as well. It is compatible with Palm, most Windows Mobile phones, Sony Ericsson, and more Symbian Phones in the future. Check out the website link below:

They also currently have a app for internet radio on your phone that is in beta. So it is free currently. It is compatible with Palm, Windows, and some symbian. See the link below:

I use Nimbuzz [www.nimbuzz.com.] It doesn't ask you or your correspondents to register and is also free. (although not opensource)
