Move Mis-Marked Addresses in Google Maps
Posted by Adam Pash at 7:00 AM on November 20, 2007
Ever look up an address on Google Maps and find that the pushpin for that address is more than a bit off? Now you can edit where Google pinpoints addresses (provided you're logged into your Google account) by clicking the Edit link and dragging the pin to a more appropriate location. Moves over 200 meters will need to be moderated before they're applied, and you can see the original location or recently-moved markers at any time. My parents' house in Iowa has always been about a mile off the mark so I've been dying for something like this, but unfortunately it looks like not all locations are currently supported.

Apparently this only works in Internet Explorer. Opened my location in Firefox and I had no link. Opened in Internet Explorer and it gave me the edit link. If it doesn't appear to work in your area, try again with IE. I'm using Firefox 2 and IE 7.

Yeah, it seems not many areas have it implemented yet, but I'm excited to see they're rolling it out!

Can't do it yet in my area either :(

That's pretty neat. It doesn't work in my area yet, though, even though they give you the edit link.

Works for me for a physical address in ff2, but my problem is that my house doesn't even show up on Google Maps. I live on a state highway (road) in New Hampshire. I put in ### NH Route 118, Town, NH and I get a different state highway in a different town nearby. I put in ### Route 118, Town, NH; I get Route 118 in a different neighboring town up the road! Yahoo Maps and Mapquest can all find my house, why can't Google Maps?
It's very frustrating and I'm not the only one in my area who has this problem with Google Maps -- Google has a lot of catching up to do with rural areas, and I wish it was easier to report/fix this for them.

I was going to do this awhile ago, but didn't because it required a Google login (which I don't have). Then, I later decided not to bother, reasoning that it is a privacy/security measure. If someone's coming to see me, I'll tell them that the map's marker is about a mile off, and give them the landmarks needed to find me. If you weren't invited, you'll be lost. :) Just my 2c.

As Space Race Ace said, anyone know how to add your address when, despite living in a well-established metropolitan area, it doesn't show up at all?

Ok, works for me now ... and in FF2. They must be propagating it out.

Haven't you learned anything from movies? Pinpointing your exact location will only make it easier for the government/Terminator/Ring Wraiths to track you down!

This is awesome. Google has had my address off by several hundred feet (2-3 houses).
I've now fixed it. :)
Thanks for the tip.

Not if I move it to my neighbors :)

@Mike Tuttle: It says who edited it last, though.

Any hints from Google as to when they will roll out to rural areas? My parents house in WV is off by about 6 miles and I'd love to fix that. (currently not supported)
