Find Anything Online with Search Operators
Posted by Tamar Weinberg at 3:00 AM on November 20, 2007
Search operators—those commands that engines use to narrow down what you're looking for—are pretty useful. For example, if you wanted to know if we've covered anything about video editing, you might be compelled to go to Google and type site:lifehacker.com video editing into the search box. But what else can you do to get the desired results? The HybridSEM weblog goes into extreme detail about the various search operators that work for Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Looking for a video on MSN about monsters? Use the feature:video monsters operator. If you're a searchaholic, this guide comes in pretty handy, and you'll certainly learn a thing or two about how to find things more easily on the 'net.

Search operators are very useful for power users (a.k.a. 'Searchaholic') and if you don't want to go back to the 'search dark ages' (I like the expression :-) then you can replace search operators with 'Google Advance Search' filtering.

Search operators bring back bad memories of the search dark ages pre-Google.

Another tip for successful searching is using your Google toolbar paired with the variety of buttons from their button gallery [www.google.com] (especially useful if you don't feel like memorizing the search operators.) "Search only the current website" is by far the greatest find of my librarian life. Speaking of which, anyone who spends any amount of time finding stuff online should learn a little librarian kung-fu in the form of Boolean searching. The University of California, Berkeley Teaching Library has a variety of useful tutorials to help you learn how to find pages on Ale OR beer AND brew OR brewing. [www.lib.berkeley.edu]

It is amazing how little people know about search operators. There is a really cool cheat sheet at [www.googleguide.com] that is useful to print up and stick on the wall (for me anyway) - saves you mucking about.
