Track Recurring Tasks with Sciral Consistency
Posted by Gina Trapani at 8:00 AM on November 17, 2007

Windows and Mac OS X: Task manager Sciral Consistency tracks to-do's that don't have hard and fast deadlines, but need to be done on a regular basis. Keep on top of when it's time to clean out the fish tank, balance your checkbook, get a haircut, an oil change, a teeth cleaning, or simply when too much time has passed since you called Mom with Consistency, which creates a time-based horizontal grid of days. You enter a task and the minimum and maximum amount of time that should pass between each time you do it, and Consistency marks which tasks need doing and which you've still got time on for a given day. Sciral Consistency is a free download (with limited use) for Windows and Mac OS; a licence will set you back $25.

Odd, I went to dinner left consumerist.com on my browser and came home and this page was in a new tab, focused. Was it because I downloaded the "Featured Download" yesterday, which BTW was free? And now I'm being asked to download $25 software? Eh?

OK, my circumstances are probably different than many of yours, but I bought and registered this program and find it really does well what it's designed to do.
I have it start automatically and I check over things. Two separate screens work best for me, home and work.
And yeah, I could have patched together an Excel sheet too, but the time was worth more than the $25 for me.
It's a good little program and I didn't mind supporting the author.

I used to use TimeTo at work, it was similar in some ways to this software and used to be free for personal use. TimeTo

Looks pretty cool, but $25 is a bit much... Any freebie alternatives?
@William Mize: It looks like this program takes care of time periods—you give it time periods and it figures out what time you should do everything... If I understand this right.
It's free with limitations:

Totally agree with the above; $25 is way too much for a glorified Excel spreadsheet.

Infact here is a screencap of an Excel sheet I banged out real quick. The sheet has three macros; Ctrl+D = done, Ctrl+I = important, Ctrl+H = hot.
You could make a really cool todo gadget with excel.

Yeah and you can add code like this:
Sub Todo_Hot()
' Hotkey Ctrl+H
ActiveCell.Interior.ColorIndex = 3
End Sub
and attach a hotkey via the Macros popup (Alt+F8).
You can have as many Ctrl+ macros as you need to work your todo list.

This program is cool, but $25 is waaaaaaay too much for something this simple. Does anyone know of any free alternatives?

Would love to see a web-based version of this with some sharing features. For example, the household chores are shared among the family members - it doesn't matter who waters the plants as long as it happens. This is a beautiful product, but not particularly easy to share. (I know, I could put the document in a shared folder, but...)
Anyone know of something that might fit the bill?

I've been looking for a todo list manager that's exactly like this... However, I envisioned the interface a lot different. Shouldn't it only show you the stuff you should be doing?
Also, of course, it should be free and online and social.

$25 for something you can do with a A4 and a marker? It doesn't even tell what person should do what task.

Different strokes for different folks. It's exactly what I want, and does exactly what I would want this to do. I like the fact that it is not shareable/social, because I don't want my spouse (or my friends) to know that I have to remind myself to do certain things! Social networking is great, but I like to keep some things private. I gladly paid for the full-featured download. If I already knew how to do the code to make an Excel spreadsheet do this, I already would have done it. But I don't, and it is not worth $25 of my time to learn. I don't blame the developers for charging for this program. It's well thought out and does exactly what it is meant to do with no learning curve involved.

I like this tool, but I also don't want to pay $25. I'm planning to develop a web 2.0 app to do something like this, if I get anywhere with it I'll post an update.

For what it's worth, this tool seems to be usable on Linux, as well, if you have Crossover Office. That probably means you can use it through a normal Wine install, as well, but I let the Codeweavers folk do the figuring out for me...
