VMWare Beta 2.0 Adds Vista, Gutsy Gibbon Support

Windows/Linux: Popular, free virtualization software VMWare has released a beta of its next Server platform, which allows users to run other operating systems inside their own. The 2.0 beta adds support for running on Windows Vista Business and Ultimate editions, Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10, and other systems, as well as a new browser-based interface and better support for USB devices. A somewhat-helpful PDF user guide is available at the download site, but I'm waiting for a handy step-by-step guide to come along before diving in too deep in Linux (I unfortunately have only Vista Home Premium at the moment). If you managed to get 2.0 up and running, share your experiences in the comments. VMWare Server 2.0 Beta is a free download for Windows and Linux systems.

Another hooray for VirtualBox, I have an XP guest on Ubuntu. Took me an embarrassing while to figure out how to install Guest Additions (it's on the menu when you boot up your guest OS) but after that it's worked great - full screen, usb support, shared directories, etc.

All I want is a confirmation box that asks "Do you really want to revert to a snapshot from six months ago and discard everything since then, or did you mean to press that other small button on the toolbar?"
I guess that's what backups are for.

A second vote for VirtualBox here. It was a rather simple process for me to get XP running under Feisty a few months back.

I found the freeware VirtualBox so much user friendly than VMWare. It's worth a look. I got Ubuntu running under XP in minutes, and I'm a clueless muppet when it comes to this kind of thing.

I don't really see the problem with the webpage only console (I downloaded the beta but haven't installed it) If it has all of the features of the regular VM Console then at least it saves me from having to have the right version on my laptop (if you have the wrong version it won't let you connect to the vmserver).
Besides, I hear this internet thing is sticking around, why not use browsers for everything?

I'm with Jon... I don't want to have to install a plugin into my browser in order to manage my virtual machines.

I can't believe how truly bad this is. Web based console only? I can't believe VMware assumes that we all want to manage stuff through a webpage. I, for one, don't.

@-emory-: Actually, I am running Gutsy Gibbon at the moment, but I have to learn how to tweak certain folder permissions to allow VMWare to set up virtual machines inside of them. I appreciate the sympathy re: Vista, however ;)

Yes, VirtualBox. I haven't tried VMWare in a while, but does it do anything VirtualBox doesn't? I thought VirtualBox already handled Vista. And why would there need to be any update to any virtual machine software to handle a new Ubuntu?

Woohoo for VirtualBox! It was absolutely painless to set up an XP virtual machine on my ubuntu computer. It is pretty much the coolest thing ever.

@Matthew_K: VMware Server 1.0 (and VMware Workstation) already have that confirmation. Go to Help > Hints > Enable All Hints, and make sure that "Show Enabled Hints" is checked.

@Jon Tackabury: I'm with you as well, I'm disappointed with this move (though excited the web interface works better than the old one).
A side note for anyone else trying to get this up and running. I was having trouble with the VI web access telling me "Access Denied" when logging in with my normal Ubuntu login. I ended up having to enable root and log into the web interface with root instead of my normal user. I'm not sure if this is the best solution but I just wanted to try it out.

VirtualBox in an Ubuntu Host is the only way to go (or any of the other approved Linux hosts). The seamless desktop function with guest additions installed in an XP guest is simply amazing to behold. With Seamless desktop I have a windows taskbar on the Right side of one of my desktops from which I can run any windows program on my Linux (compiz fusion BTW) desktop. Awesome!
