Box.net Opens Up to Web Services
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:30 AM on November 15, 2007

Online storage website Box.net has thrown open the doors and let all sorts of webapps in, giving users a handful of one-click actions and exports for their files. That means MP3s stored at Box.net can be sent to Myxer for ringtone conversion, documents can be opened in ThinkFree or Zoho or faxed through eFax, and the list runs to eight more services at this point, with more likely to come. Along with RSS file sharing and desktop mounting, the free 1GB of space offered to everyone is becoming a handy tool. Box.net requires a sign-up for its free service, as do all of the web services it currently links to.

@mahalie: I'd recommend www.xdrive.com
They've been pretty good so far, and you get 5GB for free. If you have an AIM account, you can just log in and get started. They offer file sharing and organization (and a built in MP3 player if you store music files)

Any other online storage recommendations out there? I personally don't care about folder views & fancy features(although they're a bonus) - I just want a reliable service, lots of space and a good value.
Box.net is $80/year for 5GB. HFS! NO WAY! I don't care how much bandwidth that includes, I'll just use a flippin thumb drive or just keep sneaking files onto my web server (they hate that).

I didn't like Box.net either, for the free service, they limit you to how big an individual file can be while being uploaded.
I tried to upload a 10MB file, and was told that I would have to pay $2 for a "file credit" to upload it. So although you can have 1GB free, no files you upload can be larger than 10MB or else they want to charge you two bucks per large file.
I switched to XDrive and things have worked well so far.

I moved from Box.net to SkyDrive and haven't looked back. I loved box for its superior interface and ease-of-use, but got annoyed that basic features like SSL and folder downloads were blocked.
Windows Live SkyDrive doesn't have folder downloads (yet) but uses SSL. I'm wagering that it'll improve significantly as it moves out of beta status.
Give it a shot if you haven't already.

Hm. I shared the URL to Box.net and for some people with Zone Alarm it was flagged as a sort of spy site. Extra dangerous. Any idea why? We explored a bit, and similar sites for 'free storage' were not flagged that way. Thoughts?

You can do this web services integration thing with Omnidrive as well. I just wish it would work with more services, like every one that came up, because then an online desktop could actually be viable. Like save your program online, open it online, work on it online, email it. Its everything. But like in Omni I couldn't open a PDF. So right there I stopped using it, not that I really had any intention of working on line, because I couldn't do everything.
