Google Earth Forecasts and Displays Current Weather
Posted by Adam Pash at 10:00 AM on November 14, 2007
The recent Google Earth update introduced lots of new layers, but one extremely useful layer that passed under our radar (as it were) at first glance was the addition of a new weather layer. The layer includes radar information, current conditions, and forecasts pulled every 15 minutes from Weather.com and a cloud layer that updates hourly from the Naval Research Laboratory. So if you're already obsessed with Google Earth for its stargazing and live flight tracking features, now you've got one more use for the freeware, cross-platform atlas.

I was wondering when they were going to do this! Although, the partnership(?) with Weather.com is somewhat odd, since they use Microsoft LiveEarth to power the satellite weather animations on their site.

sounds interesting, but I use Opera's touchtheSky widget... which isn't as fancy as Google Earth but does its job - even with only a mini satellite pic ;)

Great. Now the only thing missing is an updated earth. I checked our office building and it is still showing there although now it's an empty space.

@BlackBeard: I think they update twice a year. I work in GIS, and our imagery is from Februrary, and I believe theirs is from the April before.

I wish they would make it possible to rotate the earth as if you're spinning a globe. I hate how moving around in GE, North starts to spin wildly, meaning you have to constantly realign so North is up.

@ryetronics: Wow, I never noticed that, but you're right. I set out to figure this out and all I could come up with was to use the Click-and-Zoom option in the Options dialog. It keeps North up, but there was no panning allowed.
Alternatively, you can press "n" on your keyboard to make north up or "r" to change the tilt to 90 degrees and make north up.
Ack. Keeping north up would be a good option!

If you don't want to launch Google Earth to see global weather patterns and daytime/night time, check out [www.die.net]
Lots of good geeky stuff there. They even have an iGoogle gadget.
