Listen to Music On-Demand with Songza
Posted by Adam Pash at 8:00 AM on November 13, 2007
Search and play a wide variety of popular music for free with web site Songza. In a nutshell Songza is a search engine for music—most of which is live—that can stream songs as soon as you click on them and create and organize playlists on-the-fly. Beyond that you can share songs via email, with a simple link, or embedded on a web site (as I've done above). Songza isn't the first site aiming to fill the YouTube-of-audio shoes (see Hype Machine, which is incredible), but if you've got limited options for listening to music at work and recommendation sites like Pandora aren't really your thing, Songza is worth a look.

[seeqpod.net] has a great embedded player/playlist system; you can dj right off the Internet! Plus it pulls actual mp3 files (rather than youtube audio streams)

I like how Adam posted a skeptical comment to his own own post. :)
Their embedded player actually worked well for me, and their 4-way-choice-on-click thing is neat. I can't see using this as any sort of serious music player, but I definitely might use it the next time I'm curious about a band or debating whether or not to buy a song. Mostly I just use youtube for this purpose now, but the interface of Songza is simple and attractive, so I'm partial to it.

Works great for me. But I searched for dozens of songs and artists and only got crappy live versions of songs, mostly low low quality too. Does this site not have the CD versions of anything?

looks like they retrieve/stream the songs from youtube.

Hmm, looks like their embedded player could use some work.

I tried a few searches, and all but one of the results were basically cellphone recorded performances (i.e. not something you want to listen to).
it seems like songza is doing nothing more then a youTube search, and returning only the audio...

I've tried the service, had some issues at first, but then enabled Javascript, worked fine.
The Funeral by Band of Horses is much better, in my opinion.

A great source for on-demand music can be found at King Biscuit Flower Hour's Concert Vault. Search by Performer or Song. All streaming audio is free, and some concerts can be downloaded for a modest cost.

Oh man, that makes sense. Yes, I would like to amend my statement, it actually kind of sucks now - it's a lot of Karaoke crap.

My guess is that the server is being bad due to lots of traffic. This got on digg and del.icio.us popular...so I'm guessing that tons of people are trying this out.
Needless to say, it isn't working for me.

They just pull audio directly from YouTube. Do the same search on YT and get the same results, PLUS video.
They offer nothing new.

I like Deezer a lot. They have a great selection of songs, and you don't even have to register to use their service. I have no idea how they get away with this....

@allholy1: They're based here in France, they passed an agreement with a French rights organization. Needless to say, all major labels outside of France are pissed off and are going to try to knock them off! Enjoy them while you can, it is a great service though!!!

Okay, all these songs are just from YouTube. You can see it loading in the status bar. And yes I mean ALL the songs are from youtube. You can click "view on youtube" and it will appear. And youtube does not have a good reputation for sound quality.
