Use FeedCrier to Read Feeds Via IM
Posted by Wendy Boswell at 8:00 AM on November 12, 2007
Get your favourite site feeds via FeedCrier, a service that delivers updates to your instant messenger client. No download is required; just type in the username for AIM, MSN, Jabber, or Google Talk, along with the website you're interested in getting updates from, and you're done. This would be a good way to get the latest news updates delivered to you almost in real time. FeedCrier is a similar service to web app immedi.at; both are excellent tools for keeping a very close watch on a particular feed.

Yeah, I've tried to use this service before and it didn't work then.
I tried to use it now, and it still doesn't work.
I even tried using their inpage chat feature to talk to someone about it and that didn't work either. Or at least no one showed up to talk.
They are now a part of the same company as imified.. which works great! So hopefully at some point in the future feedcrier will as well, b/c it's a really good idea.
Maybe the Lifehacker folks can find out what gives?
Incidentally, did anyone from Lifehacker actually use this service, or did they just regurgitate someone else's press release?

It appears to be backed up, took nearly two minutes to get a response to the command 'list'. Did this get on Digg?

I really can't see how this belongs on a 'productivity' site. I have a hard enough time staying focused with people IMing me as it is (though the communication is still a benefit enough to keep it running) but I'd go absolutely nuts if I was interrupted by a news article every 5-10 minutes. I know there's other RSS feeds you might want to get right away (specialized news alerts, document or calendar updates) but wow, this seems like bad idea for anyone who wants to get anything done.

@Wendy - I really like your weekend coverage but you missed a few things in your post. First off immedi.at was the service I too used before it was taken off line probably over 1 year ago now, so that link is not to helpful.
As noted by prometheanfire, they are part of Imified, and that should be noted as both services work very well.
I agree with some of the commenters you don't subscribe to every feed, but to the ones that are important to you. I covered FeedCrier back in March 2007, and I still use it everyday. It is a great RSS reader.

I see lots of these sorts of services and worry about giving them my details, perhaps im being paranoid?
From a Newbie, Hi all :-)

I, too, have had poor experiences with FeedCrier. It's worked only sporadically for some weeks, and is prone to multi-month lapses in service that go unexplained. Nevertheless, I use it because little else out there works. ZapTXT has an even worse reliability record.

[inezha.com] "Anothr: MSN/Skype/GTalk RSS bot" seems like a similar service, I used it for a few days, it worked as stated, but I much prefer a normal RSS reader
