Better YouTube Firefox Extension
Posted by Gina Trapani at 4:00 AM on November 8, 2007

Watch YouTube videos more efficiently with Better YouTube, a brand new Firefox extension that compiles our favourite YouTube Greasemonkey scripts into a single convenient package. Better YouTube smartly enlarges videos for better viewing, hides user comments, declutters the page and disables autoplay (great for vids open in a background tab.) Following in the footsteps of Better Gmail and friends, customise your online video-viewing with Better YouTube.
Better YouTube Firefox extension
Version: 0.2 Released: November 7, 2007 Creator: Gina Trapani, using scripts by various developers, compiled using Anthony Lieuallen's Greasemonkey Compiler.License: Better YouTube is licensed under the GNU General Public License as specified by Anthony Lieuallen's Greasemonkey Compiler. All user scripts are copyright their original authors and maintain their original licence as specified by their original author. (User scripts are located in the content/user_scripts folder in the Better YouTube .xpi package.)
What it does: Adds a menu of optional extra features to YouTube. To view the enabled features and get more information on each, in Firefox's Add-ons dialog, click on Better YouTube's Preferences dialog, as shown:

Some screenshots of Better YouTube's options in action:
Installation: Click the Better YouTube download button above in Firefox. A yellow bar will appear across the page that reads "Firefox prevented this site (lifehacker.com/ginatrapani.org) from asking you to install software on your computer." Click the "Edit Options" button and allow the site. Then, click on the link again. Press the Install button in the dialog box, and restart Firefox.
Usage: Once Better YouTube is installed, go to any YouTube video page to see the enhancements. To turn a feature on or off, visit the extensions Preferences dialog and select or deselect the appropriate checkboxes. Refresh YouTube to see your changes.
Credits: Better YouTube is a compilation of user scripts written by several Greasemonkey scripters. The full list of Better YouTube user scripts and their authors is as follows:
- Theater View (Large Video + Clean Page)
YouTube Theater--Enlarges video full-screen and clears away other page elements.
By Erik Nomitch - Center and Enlarge Video
YouTube Resizer--Moves video to the centre of the screen and enlarges it.
By arantius - Disable Autoplay
Videos don't automatically play when the page loads.
By Yansky - Expand "About This Video"
Automatically displays the full video information, without having to click the more link.
By Addison Hatcher - Hide Comments and Related Videos
YouTube Cleaner 2.0--Removes comments and related videos, with links to toggle back on.
By raezr
I compiled the user scripts using Anthony Lieuallen's Greasemonkey Compiler and modified the output of the compiler to include multiple scripts with the ability to enable and disable individual scripts. Thanks to Adam for suggesting Better YouTube.
Changelog:
- Version 0.2: Fixed bug where features didn't work on YouTube pages with www in the URL.
- Version 0.1: Released.
Bug reports and feature requests: Got a favourite YouTube Greasemonkey user script you'd like included in Better YouTube? A bug, a critique, a suggestion? Leave a comment here. Enjoy your better YouTube.

@Pasha: I haven't done extensive performance tests, but it's helpful to know that this extension uses the Greasemonkey code, so most likely the performance difference is minimal.
What these extensions do is save you the time of hunting down all the different user scripts and configuring them using the GM interface (with matching on URLs, etc.)
If you're already running GM, that benefit probably isn't huge; but for users who just want a few good YouTube tweaks in one package, this is it.

Thanks for this! I have a question though. What is better for my firefox, greasemonkey, or a compiled script, like this extension?
The only thing i can say so far, is that when an extension is installed, i have to restart, where with greasemonkey, i just refersh.
What about performance and memory, what works better?

Center and Enlarged doesn't work for me either. Actually, it worked once, and after that it no longer enlarges the video. Great extension guys. I look forward to the next bug fix.

Looks promising although it doesn't seem to "fully" work with 3.0 nightlies. I checked "Center and Enlarge Video" and it does center it (moving the description down) but enlarging doesn't work for some reason. Manually editing the size with Firebug works fine though. The Error Console doesn't show anything related and I disabled FlashBlock for youtube.
I don't know waht information else to provide, but I guess I should try it on a fresh profile first before complaining :D

Right on, all, thanks for being my brave testers. Fix just published--version 0.2. Get it using the Find Updates button in the Add-ons dialog or just click the download link above.
And do let me know if it's not working for you as expected, or if you have a favorite user script or skin you'd like to see included.

Ok, question for you folks it's not working for: is there a difference in behavior when you go to WWW.youtube.com URLs and just youtube.com addresses?

Does not work for me in Firefox 2.0.0.9 and Vista Ultimate. I restarted FF and can access the menu, but like others it doesn't effect youtube pages at all.

@Gina Trapani, Lifehacker Editor: OK, yes that's true. I had everything other than Theatre mode ticked.
I just tried with ONLY "Disable Autoplay" ticked, and the videos still autoplayed :o(
I'm on XP with FF 2.0.0.9. Will try disabling other extensions to see if there's a conflict.

@AragornsBeard: Hmm, everything on the list can't be ticked (there are conflicts, so if Theater is ticked, for instance, Center and Enlarge should uncheck. Try unchecking everything except "Disable AutoPlay" and refresh a video page, and let me know if the video starts playing automatically.
@spartan789: What happens when you press the Preferences button in the Add-ons dialog?
Just so you all know, I tested this extension on Windows XP and Leopard, but AFAIK it should work everywhere. As soon as I hunt down the problem I'll do my best to put out a fix.
If it's not working for you, do me a favor and post as much information about the issue as possible. Thanks!

Fantastic. I'm going to download this and install right away. Thanks, Lifehacker.
One feature request right off the bat would be a high-quality YouTube video downloader and converter. I've used a few FF Greasemonkey scripts and some including web-based ones (keepvid, zamzar, etc), but haven't found anything that's are consistent or don't compress the file when converting.
A few mac-using friends praise Tube Sock, but I don't know if there's a Windows version or equivalent.

@Pasha: Actually, with this one, a simple refresh of the video page seems to work if I change any of the settings for Better Youtube.
Anyways, thanks for this, LH. This is really helpful, especially since I'm constantly on youtube. Having the comments being toggle-able is helpful for when I don't want to deal with insane amounts of stupidity....:D

Hi,
Excellent add-on. :)
However, the search area wraps over long titles by the way when using the "Theater View" option. Perhaps move it above the title of the video.
Example:
[youtube.com]
Also, when you check a check-box that effects others then you should disable the other check boxes so newbies don't get confused. Sure that means it takes another click to re-enable but it makes it easier for most to use.
The "Center and Enlarge Video" option does not seem to work correctly. The video is now centered on the screen but the video is not any large. Note: The "Theater View" option does correctly make it larger.
Lastly can you add an option of "Display Video Only".
Here is my Stylish CSS hack so that only the video is displayed and centered:
[userstyles.org]
Working on making the video bigger as well.
Thanks,
Will

Small update, my CSS hack now makes the video larger as well. :)
Also, you can download the Greasemonkey version if you prefer. So this should be easy to add to this add-on. I hope you do?

0.1 stopped working in Flock until I updated to 0.2 (which I didn't know was out until I came here)... I'll keep you posted as to if the 0.2 version keeps working in flock or if it breaks as well.

@dale3h: Well, if the extension were updated to work with pages that have "www" in the URL, then I am sure that it can be easily updated to work with ca.youtube.com. Very little of this extension's source code should need to be modified for this extension to work with pages that have URLs such as those.
It is quite a coincidence that this extension was released shortly after I commented on the possibility of a "Better YouTube" extension being released soon. I mentioned this in a recent post on my blog at www.jake.kasprzak.ca as I followed up on what was said about a previous post there. And as you may have noticed, it was this previous post that was featured here earlier, and was the one where Adam Pash suggested that a "Better YouTube" extension be made available. I plan on testing out this extension myself and I may make a few suggestions on how it can be improved. Once would at least expect suggestions on scripts that should be included in this extension from the individual who already wrote about a few that were useful.

"Center and enlarge" is not working for me, though everything else seems to work. The video shows up in the center, but it shows up as it normally does, small in size.
Wait, that's not important, Better Gmail Extension is not working with the new gmail D: !!
;)
Great work on the Better "Something" Extensions :D

One question, is there a way to center and NOT enlarge the video?
Personally, having it enlarged just screws over any remaining quality the video has.

Gina, Thanks for all your work on your Better extensions.
I sure hope you add the Better Titles script: [userscripts.org]
(It even already has better in it's name)
as well as the Dark Grey overlay:
[userstyles.org]
These defiantly add to a better youtube experience.
Although my personal favorite was the now defunct youtube googler. Which is sadly incompatible with the recent youtube update.
Thanks again and keep the extensions coming.

OK, if you want to play videos through StumbleUpon, you may need to uncheck 'Disable AutoPlay' and restart FireFox. Hopefully this is a bug that can be fixed.
