Add Wireless Sync To Your Camera with Eye-Fi
Posted by Adam Pash at 5:00 AM on November 2, 2007
The Eye-Fi secure digital memory card adds Wi-Fi to any camera and supports automatic wireless uploading to your computer as well as tonnes of different web-based photo sites, from Flickr and Facebook to Picasa and the open source Gallery2. You just plug the card into your camera and set up wireless access from your computer, then snap pics like normal. Whenever you're in range of your wireless router, Eye-Fi will automatically upload the pics; if you're not in range, Eye-Fi will upload them when you are (it's also a regular 2GB memory card). The Eye-Fi will set you back $US99, but it'll also rid you of the cord and cradle clutter of your traditional sync tools. We haven't gotten our hands on one (yet), but the folks at Gizmodo gave it a rave.

@twoback: And without the wireless part, which is the whole point.

For those of you who havent seen it before theres a great little freeware app called Transferer - [www.dataproductservices.com] I use this on my homeade digital picture frame. It lets you automatically specify a destination and source(your memory card). So when you stick your card in the slot, it automatically starts transferring the pictures off the card and onto the source folder you specified on the machine. Basically the same thing going on here, just without the website upload.

Ugh. $99 for this? Plus I have to be in range of my router?
Just buy a little card reader and take the extra 12 seconds to put the card in there.

I remember reading about his ages ago and wanting one ever since seeing it on Stewart Butterfield's flickr stream.
99.00 is kinda high for 2GB of SD wireless goodness.

Imagine a hack for this to be able to send it to your home computer from a laptop via some Verizon wireless card, that would be so awesome :D.

Again. This is only for cameras with SD memory slot. No luck for Sony camera users.

@holymogwai: Yeah my last two computers have had card readers. How did I ever live without it?

well a good hack would be to upload directly to a website through a hotspot or something. Once you can get that far, there is no limit to what can be done. At the moment the functionality is too limited, as you have to be near your router.

Myron: Of course without the wireless part but like Holymogwai said, for 99 bucks and you have to be in range of your own router, just get up and go put the card in the reader. When Eye-Fi can work on public AP's then there would be the real deal.

@dunxd: You can choose to send the photos only to your PC without going through their site.

Hmm - relies on a third party website to upload to website OR YOUR PC. So if the company goes out of business does this become useless?
And bandwidth is a massive issue. Is that uploading 2GB worth of pictures across the internet to some website then back to my house just so I can get my photos on my PC?

It's worth noting that while this card functions as a standard SD card, and can therefore be used to store any type of image your camera can produce (ie: JPEG, RAW, TIFF), it will ONLY transfer JPEGs over the WiFi.
Any other type of file MUST be transferred using a card reader. I've just spoken with tech-support at EyeFi and was told this in no uncertain terms. :/
I can see why they'd limit WiFi transfers to JPEGs on uploads destined for the various online services they support, but I really can't understand why they don't allow any other types of files to be transferred to a computer over the local network.
According to EyeFi, they have no plans to change that in the future. Too bad, really, as I could see this being a really useful product otherwise..

This would likely be good for field data capture.
Trying to get a picture from the camera to a Panasonic Toughbook or Fujitsu usually means having a USB cable hooked up and dangling in the way. Or using a RICOH camera with integrated GPS and Bluetooth.
It's worth a try.

Add network detection and support for RAW file transfers, and this might be more than just a gimmick. Ah well, someone else is bound to do it again, and do it better: nice try, eye-fi.
Not only would I be uncomfortable having EyeFi handle my personal photos (I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I like my privacy, thank you!), but I'm not comfortable owning an overpriced brick of an SD card if EyeFi were to go under: if their servers are a required piece of the puzzle, I'm assuming that's hard coded into the card? No sale.

I was super stoked about this when I saw this on PhotoJoJo, but then I read this in the FAQ:
"
Q: What if my computer's off?
A: Eye-fi always sends all your photos to Eye-fi's secure servers first. From there, they go to your selected photo sharing sites, and to your computer next time it's online. (You can also choose to send your photos only to an online service, or only to your computer.)
"
I don't know how everyone else feels, but I don't like Eye-fi having a copy of every photo I ever take. Seems a bit Minority Reportish....
Anyone know if there is a hack to just copy the pics to your computer? For that luxury I would surely pay $99....

@Myrrh Also, a CF card instead of just SD.
