Make Your Linux Desktop Look Like a Mac
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:30 AM on November 1, 2007
Linux only: Want the look and feel of a Mac without paying the high-end design premium? Tired of hearing from all your Mac-happy friends how awesome Leopard looks? Got time to run through six pages of instructions? Then HowTo Forge has got you covered. Their guide to making a nearly total theme conversion requires Compiz Fusion (installed by default on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon), Awn and the patience to download and place a hefty handful of files, but everything seems to be covered, right down to the system sounds. The guide is written for GNOME-based Linux systems and requires a number of downloads, some of which might not pass the most stringent legal (or open source) tests but are otherwise free. I haven't tried it myself, but this weekend's another story.

I'm not a MAC guy, but if you want your Linux desktop to look like a MAC, just use DreamLinux from Brazil. It emulates OSX to a "T". I'm pretty sure it is based on Tiger, moreso than Leopard.
THOR222 mentioned iconaholic.com for the wallpaper. I've found the best wallpapers are from www.interfacelift.com. That's my two cents!!!

@BackDoorAngel: There's a shareware program to change the default OS X theme: Shapeshifter
I would imagine most people would use it for one of the original themes, but themes exist for replicating NextStep, XP, Be, and the old QNX desktops. I think some themes originally developed for KDE/Gnome have also been ported. I haven't looked recently but wouldn't surprised if a Vista theme exists. You can also obtain icon sets to complete the transformation.
In addition, there are all sorts of other hacks for changing the default appearance. I hope my favorite, Transparent Dock will get updated for Leopard.

how come i see lots of these but i never see a "make your mac desktop look like a _____"
why does no one ever change the way their mac looks? there must be SOME people who don't like the defaults.

I'm a fan of the Mac OS.... but honestly the dock here and the wallpaper makes this look a bit better. Is that the wallpaper design that has those two lights cascading down on either side of the desktop?? Or is that Linux rendering the light?
Also, check out the dock on the link -- looks better to me. And I've been running Leopard since the beta.
Regardless, I...want.....that.....wallpaper. :-)

@Shoeb Ahmed: While not the same, you can find a set of "Aqua" (Mac-like) wallpapers at [www.iconaholic.com]

I have half done this, using the tutorial located here : [www.taimila.com]
This new one seems much easier for beginners.
Well Done.

Nice guide. I don't want to make my desktop look just like OSX, but there are a few pieces in here that I'll grab and use.

Why on Earth would you WANT the Leopard Dock. (for the record, I just bought Leopard)

The whole Mac vs. PC vs. Unix vs. Whatever flame wars get really old.

@hometoast: Some of us prefer the functionality of Linux to Mac...

Where can I get this beautiful wallpaper?

it still just looks like a mac. So you get all the pretentiousness without the functionality.

yes! This rules. I went to the leopard launch but we don't have the funds for a new imac....

I'm a linux guy, and I prefer the functionality of Linux over Mac or PC, but that's just me. Anyway, there are somethings that I like from the mac, like the wallpapers, icons and docker. However, I only like the docker for looks, i never use, because it interferes with my productivity. And the brushed metal? all that gray? that looks good only for a few minutes...but if you work 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week, it gets boring and dull. I need more color in my life. So that's why I would take the icons and the wallpapers from a Mac, but not anything else. I have more choices for the other stuff in Linux than in a Mac (or Windows for that matter).

The only thing that fits my taste here, is AWN dock. I'm not really a Mac fan, so brushed chrome is rather ugly. Despite all of above, this is still a great How To ;)

I actually prefer linux to mac as well; and spend most of my day in windows. I just don't get why anyone wants to make one thing look completely like another. Like the XP theme for KDE. Like the OSX stuff for, well everything.

Ubuntu user over here.
Just thought I'd say, that wallpaper looks fantastic, and OSX has some of the best icons I've ever seen.
Also, I can't wait for the curved look to make it to the BZR branch of AWN. That'll be sweet.

Is there a "Make your PC look like a Mac" article anywhere?
