Meebo Adds Video and Voice Chat to Web-Based IM
Posted by Adam Pash at 7:45 AM on October 31, 2007

Popular web-based chat application Meebo has integrated voice and video chat applications directly into the Meebo's IM window. Just fire up a chat in Meebo, then click the rocket ship icon on the message toolbar. Your window will expand to offer different integrated voice and video chat options, like previously mentioned TokBox. If your buddy isn't also chatting in Meebo, she'll get a link to open a Meebo chat and start the voice or video conferencing. We're not talking the high resolution of Skype, but for a web-based, integrated video chat solution for any IM contacts, it's pretty impressive.

Hey great demo app although I was surprise to find out that even after i Log out of it I still had my camera activity led turned on, so maybe it was still using it. Hope this doesnt mean being logged out still uses up your bandwidth.
it worked out very nicely. I was impressed with the technology

Impressive. Meebo has been rocking alot lately with their tech design team. They rolled out file transfer feature not even 3 months ago. Now it's voice n chat. Nice. Keep up the good work. I've been using it since it first launched. Now I will even use it more.

It still doesn't recognize cyrillic encoding.
So it's good only for Enlish-speaking audience or, for that matter, any languages based on Latin letters.

Now if meebo can just accomplish the feat of tabbed IM windows, I'd be sold! I still love my Pidgin!

Does anyone know if people have to be on a 'meebo' account to communicate over voice/video, or does it work with the msn/yahoo/aim/gtalk video/voice protocols as well?
There's no way I'm goint to be able to convince people to get another IM account just so we can video-chat over the web.

@tommertron: You don't need a Meebo account at all. When you click the link, it just opens the video/audio chat window ready to go.
