Jailbreak Your iPhone or iPod Touch with One Click
Posted by Adam Pash at 4:00 AM on October 30, 2007
Jailbreaking the iPod touch/iPhone is now an utterly simple, one-click affair—which means if you've been waiting to jailbreak your iPod touch or iPhone (since the 1.1.1 firmware upgrade), the time is now. Just point your Safari browser to http://jailbreakme.com/ and click the Install AppSnapp link. It may sound scary, but the web site takes advantage of a mobile Safari exploit to install Installer.app (the gateway application for installing more applications) to your device. If you give it a try, here's what you can expect.
After clicking the Install AppSnapp link, Safari will close (or at least it did for me) and your phone will eventually return to the "Slide to Unlock" screen (it could take up to 5 minutes, depending on your connection speed—the whole process literally took less than a minute on my phone). The AppSnapp instructions state that once you slide, you'll see the Installer.app icon, meaning you're ready to go. When I tried unlocking my phone with the slider, it froze up, so at this point, I just restarted my iPhone. When it finished booting up, there was Installer.app in all it's glory, ready to install all sorts of goodies on my iPhone. "What kind of goodies?" you ask. Applications like these, for example:
The iPhone/iPod touch applications available have actually improved and broadened a lot since just last month when I made that iPhone app gallery, so there are still a whole lot of great apps available that aren't included in the gallery. As you may remember, we showed you how to jailbreak your iPhone using a couple of different methods several weeks back, but this one-click Safari hack requires absolutely no hacking skills—or even advanced computer skills. As always, proceed at your own risk. This method does exploit your phone and could potentially give access to your info if malicious forces were at work. However, one of the particularly interesting things about this installation method is that not only does it install Installer.app, but it also fixes the exploit that allows this to happen.

@gotmike: There is no risk of the phone bricking....it says on their website it's no longer a concern with this method of jailbreaking
go to the website and read the FAQ...

Is the risk of bricking your iPhone still a concern? I know that when Apple updated their firmware a lot of hacked iPhones stopped working. Did the community come up with a solution to get the bricked units back up and running? Who knows what the next firmware update from Apple will bring.

@Adam Pash, LH Senior Editor: I am on Edge (it's fast here at work)
Does it demand that I have to be on Wi-Fi like the iTunes store?
I think I am going to try shutting off the auto-locking...
I will update if I am successful
(I might try this when I get home and can get on Wi-Fi)

@metalhaze:
I had the same problem, and it was because I was not patient enough once Safari booted me back to the home screen. To get the installer app to install, I had to restore my iPhone & re-visit the website to perform the hack.

Is it not ironic that "the web site takes advantage of a mobile Safari exploit to install Installer.app"? Wait, wasn't the reason Apple had for "jailing" the iPhone was so that malware couldn't get installed?

@AndrewJStone: AIM on PSP or Meebo might just solve that problem for you. Just go there on Safari on the iPhone and sign in. See how you like it =].

One-click jailbreaking is perfect for ipod-retards like myself, but what do I do once it's "jailbroken"?
I assume Installer.app is an application that allows me to install other applications, but dont I somehow have to find these apps first? And then magically copy them over to my ipod before I can install them?

@metalhaze: Try turning off your auto-locking while it's processing. Also, are you connected to Wi-Fi (obv. EDGE will take longer)?

I feel like my impatience might have ruined the whole process...
I must have hit the download link like 4 times already.
Each time it boots me back to the home screen and closes Safari and nothing happens.
It just sits there until the screensaver comes on and then it goes to black to power saving mode.
I turn it back on and slide to unlock and I still have nothing...
I don't get it...
(p.s. I am running 1.1.1)

@metalhaze: Ooo, thanks for the heads up on that. What happened for me was that the iPhone froze when I went for the unlock, so I had to restart. Sorry for the lack of clarity; I've updated the post. You should definitely wait until it returns to the slide-to-unlock screen.

You instructions are conflicting to those listed on the jailbreak website.
You say,
"After clicking the Install AppSnapp link, Safari will close (or at least it did for me). At this point, I just restarted my iPhone, and when it finished booting up, there was Installer.app in all it's glory, ready to install all sorts of goodies on my iPhone"
But the website says nothing about restarting the phone and it says to wait for a slide to unlock to appear after hitting the download button which could take up to 5 minutes.
I have yet to get this to work. I have hit the download button, safari kicked me to the home screen and restarted and waited around for a while and no installer app appears on my homepage when I turn it back on...
Do I have to do a hard reboot by holding the home and power button?

In general, my iPhone takes care of what i need... the only thing i REALLY wish i could do is mobile AIM... but i have my AIM account set up to forward messages when i'm not signed on... and i'm not worried about the text messages.
So what, in all honesty, would i use this for? I'm not asking in the usual internet comment thread snark way... i really mean it. I'm not in to games, i don't feel the need to run an FTP client...
Any suggestions for apps i can't live without? I'm an AT&T customer, happy with my ringtones...
Thanks!

@AndrewJStone: I've never used an iPhone, but if you visit www.meebo.com via your safari browser... that will give you a variety of instant messaging online for FREE. which is pretty sweet. I use it on the go.

Just so I have this straight:
All this is done after you Activate the iPhone?
Or will this activate the iPhone as well?
I ask because I'm seriously considering an iPhone but DETEST AT&T and want to keep my current provider (T-Mobile) and SIM card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. :-)

@Atlantys: Installer.app downloads the applications directly to the iPhone/iPod touch wirelessly (if you're on a touch, you'll need to be connected to Wi-Fi)—meaning you never have to copy anything anywhere. It's all very simple. You can look at it in more detail near the end of this howto.

@winexprt: Yep after.
Basically the process to use another provider goes:
- Activate (You can do this without registering for AT&T ... search online).
- Jailbreak (installs ssh etc. to allow installation of apps / software / hacks)
- Install software to allow other sim (AnySIM, iPhoneSimFree etc)

If you have unlocked it, you can get into trouble if you try to unlock it again by mistake (eg, you will 'brick' it).
The iPhone Elite dev team has created a 'revirginizer' to get your phone back to it's original or 'virgin' state- see HERE for details

oh have I been waiting for this, I was kicking myself for upgrading.
I got the installer app ok, but when running it is ironically stuck midscroll with "Refreshes may hang for a long time if a server does not respond"

ps, if you can wait...Steve Jobs has said he will release an SDK for the iPhone in February next year. One would assume then that the iPhone internal software would be update via iTunes to allow whatever software will be developed to be installed easily on the iPhone.

Has anyone had any experience with the 3rd party sources? Recommendations etc?
And is there any mechanism to see if they're trustworthy? Like a reputation site or something would be perfect.
I've just done this to my iPod touch, so I'm completely unconcerned about someone hacking in, however I could see how someone would be more concerned about their iPhone.

Okay, so I installed it all no problem. Super easy, but now that I have installer on there and I've installed some stuff (blackjack for instance), when I try to run those programs it just shoots back to desktop. Ahhh, it's like being given mana but not being able to eat it. So, where do you go when something like this isn't working 100%?

After Jailbreaking using this method, you'll need to install Community Sources to then install the BSD subsystem and Open SSH. This'll allow you to SFTP into the device (this took me far too long to realize)
I was able to get the iPhone apps installed this way (I found some youtube videos by "ipodtouchmaster" with easy to follow instructions)
Also: you can install Term-vt100 to set the root password to something other than alpine if you're worried about security

Found my own solution. You have to install the BSD subsystem first, then the apps.

No one has actually spoken about performance after the device is "jailbroken". I manage to get it going fine, installed the things I wanted but the performance of my itouch became sluggish to the point of being unusable. Infact, even after I uninstalled everything except vnotes it would still take 5 secs for it to respond from the "slide to unlock" screen to the main menu...
anyone with similar experiences?

the whole process took about one minute for me. Totally painless. But I can't find the vNotes application listed anywhere. I used that app all the time before the 1.1.1 upgrade and want it back. Any idea how to locate it?

SPW: I had the same experience but after a few tries I was able to restore the phone. Since I was going on a business trip the day after I didn't try again but I will when I get home. I didn't read the instructions and went back to Safari to early during the jailbreaking process.

Same problem here. When I hit the Installer link on the web site it kicks me out of safari. Has anyone else had this problem, and more importantly, is there a way to fix it? Thanks!

Jingo, use the revirginizer? - it seems a bit complex for me but I think it has an automated script now..
As is always the case with these sorts of things, use at your own risk.

Alright finally!! Restarted and it worked just fine! I can now see the installer. Here are the steps I took to get this to work after 5 hours.
1) Restore iPod,
2) SET GENERAL SETTINGS/AUTO LOCK - Never
3) Go to JailBreakMe.com install app
4) Restart iPod.
5) Voila! Installer shows up.
