Media Player Show and Tell
Posted by Adam Pash at 2:00 AM on October 26, 2007

For some people, desktop media player applications are a very personal thing. Rather than living life in the vanilla world of iTunes and Windows Media Player, these music lovers prefer media players they can tweak, customise, and personalise to their heart's content. Today we're taking a look a look at user-submitted pictures of their always impressive and often enviable desktop media players. Hit the jump to take a look, and if you see one you like, find out how they did it.
Now for the highlights rundown:
- Okay, so somebody had to submit and make a case for the obligatory iTunes.
- It's very subtle, but this is probably one of the coolest media player mods I've seen.
- Unsurprisingly, foobar2000 is extremely popular, with very, very good reason.
- Though Winamp had a respectable showing.
- Media Monkey ain't no slouch, either.
- Gotta love Amarok.
- We even saw one media player for Halo lovers.
As always, thanks to everyone who submitted!

AIMP2 (Windows): The website is in Russian, but the player has multilingual support. Great player with a little footprint for the feature set. I loved this find.

@JRoc23JOCULARITY: No problem. You can find all of the LH Special stuff here:

@skeksil: foobar2000 has multiple fields in any tag, I'd recommend that. If you look at cbowron's setup [lifehacker.com], the tagger window (which will work with any tag, I use it for multiple genres too) is part of a plugin (cwb_hooks) he wrote, which you can grab from his wiki [www.bazquux.com]

@Kraft: Is there a way to make these "lh specials" part of my speed dial? Personally I care to see what other creative want to people share.
I find myself amused everytime my feed reader (Thunderbird) keeps jumping up and down waiting for all of these pages to load.

@skeksil: The thing I do is set up a smart playlist in iTunes, and tag the respective media files in the comments. Then, in the smart playlist, you set the options to match ANY of the following rules, and in the rules you put Comments containg "x", x of course being whatever you tagged them :D works great if you wanna get a few songs in particular to match yer mood.

No Songbird users out there yet?

are there any media players that allow the user to cross-list individual songs? for example, one day i may want to listen to a random playlist from the "rock" genre; the next day i'm in the mood for just "oldies". can any media player add multiple tags for genres? i guess i'd be really picky if it also worked within media center itself. any help would be appreciated.

Is there a way to filter out these "sharing" posts from the RSS feed? Personally, I seldom care about what people have in their pockets, or their desktop, or their media player.
I find myself annoyed everytime my feed reader (Google Reader) keeps jumping around waiting for all of these images to load.

@Kraft: i agree, please, no more 'show me your junk' posts, especially in the life hacker 'top' RSS feed. seriously, this is making me consider to unsubscribe over this. it boring, sucks to view on google reader, and really it is not helping me hack-my-life.

Anyone know of a media player I can use:
* In Ubuntu (with Gnome, preferably)
* With my Creative Zen Micro (uses NJB interface, not MTP, sadly)
Many thanks.

@sekeksil: again I recommend Foobar2000 it's the most versatile player you'll find on Windows - and as of the .9.5 beta it actually doesn't look ugly out of the box :)
Otherwise, hold off until we see Amarok for Windows.

Skeksil! It's pretty easy with windows media player. Just type in your multiple genres in the genre field/tag separated with a semi colon. If you tag your song genre as UK;Hip Hop;Chilled then when you select the Genre you want to listen to it will appear in each of the three genre playlists.
My question - any free software out there that auto beat counts and then tags with bpm? I want to construct playlists with similar beat count!

Wow, some of those screenshots look great. I'm having trouble working out how to get Foobar to work with that PanelsUI thing though. Whatever I do it comes out just looking plain :(

I seem to have a handle on Foobar now :)
Got most of the components installed apart from the Lyrics DB for which the link seems to be dead.

I've really just started looking into using Foobar because I hate using MMJB... however, Foobar seems far too convoluted to just get to the point where I can use it. That, and there's no built-in CD burning function from what I've read.
I know what I'm seeing at this point is because I'm new to Foobar, but would someone please tell me how this is superior? It's obvious Foobar is great, seeing all the screen shots... but there's no documentation I could find, just a bunch of random forums to ask questions on. So... how does a person really get into this thingy?

@thepounder: OK... removed my head from my backside and got Foobar underway pretty nicely. Much easier than it seemed to start with, thanks to the Foobar Wiki.
Now I just have to figure out how to modify the window's frame colors like a few of the pics above show.

Can't believe I missed this "submit your", especially since no one is using the rather fabulous Helium Music Manager ([www.helium-music-manager.com])
So, I thought I post a link to a screenshot here instead ;)

@lethal: Awesome. Thank you very much. I'm currently trying to wrap my head around PanelsUI.
I re-installed it and found the CD burning option you mentioned, and I was lucky enough to already have Nero installed so that'll work like a champ.
Again, very cool of you. Thank you.

@thepounder: Panels UI (very common) or foo_gfx (rare) are probably what you're looking for; default UI and columns UI don't allow freeform skinning, but they are faster.
Oh, and by the way, there is a CD burning plugin in the installation package (optional), it does require nero, however.

I'm disappointed with this post. I'm a mac user and was hoping to see some new innovative media players that would blow itunes out of the water. Unfortunately apart from the itunes and widget posts, I saw nothing for macs. Is itunes really that good?

Oh, and Sort Fields to sort tracks as if they had different tag names.

Okay, here's my case for iTunes:
Album by Year Column
Organizes tracks by artist then their albums in chronological order.
Grouping
Tracks in a grouping play together.
Compilations
Tracks in compilation albums kept together at the bottom of the song browser.
Go-To-Track Arrow
(Little arrow at right in currently playing track window)
Highlights the currently playing track (very handy for me).
And more...
iTunes is a memory hog and sucks at most other things besides music navigation but features like those above keep me a user.

@Adam Pash, LH Senior Editor: While we're all in a complain-about-the-RSS-feed mood, what would be the feed URL to omit all the "One year ago on LIfehacker", "stats feed", "Best posts this week" and such? (I.e the ones that are repeating previous RSS items)

Sorry, I should have mentioned at the start of that last post that I was being specific to foobar2000. I'd be open to other players as well but I need something that is light on memory usage and foobar2000 fits the bill.

Is there any component out there that will allow you to control playlists and playback via web browser on a local network? I've tried foohttpserver but it appears to be out of date and doesn't work with the current version of foobar2000.

@windsurfer619:
I've played with Songbird and it really does look like it will be great (the options to get music off websites are awesome) but it's like a less stable iTunes with cooler features.
Let's see what happens in the next year or so and it could be a real contender.

@Deemonie: Songbird actually does all that. It even has an iTunes skin, for those die-hard iTunes lovers, called iBird. I actually created that skin myself.
The current release candidate is surprisingly stable, and it's cross-platform, so there really isn't any reason to not try on the 'Bird.

Foobar (Windows) is essential for the resource geek in you. It has a minimalistic user interface belying a plethora of features such as ripping, encoding, transcoding, tagging and tab playlist management (like firefox's tabs !)
MPD (MacOSX, Linux, BSD) with your choice of frontend (mpc with xbindkeys for me) is ideal for unix-like users. MPD is a Music Player Daemon, and frankly, daemons rock. They run in the background, and can be controlled remotely, over a web interface. How cool is that? And it doesn't stop there.
