Quicksilver Updates, Prepares for Leopard
Posted by Adam Pash at 6:09 PM on October 25, 2007

Mac OS X only: The keyboard shortcut loving Mac owner's favourite app, Quicksilver, has received a minor update, presumably in preparation for the upcoming release of Leopard. Aside from the version update (it's B52 from B51, despite what Quicksilver's homepage says at the time of this writing), the most significant difference I've noticed is what appears to be a very slight refresh of the preferences, triggers, catalog, and plug-ins manager (I saw a spinner when I switched tabs that's new to me). But there actually is a little more.
The only other new "feature" that's obvious on first install is the request to help Alcor and the folks at Blacktree improve Quicksilver by sending them a little usage data (see screenshot). Quicksilver saw a somewhat silent new release a week or two ago (to build 3812), but it wasn't pushing out automatically with the update check and so it mostly floated under the radar. However, posts in the Quicksilver forums (which are down as I write this) indicated that that release was, as I stated above, mostly in preparation for Leopard.
Well, it's nothing new or especially fancy, but it is very exciting to see some active development for Quicksilver, and it's good to know that my favourite Mac app will still be running like a dream when I upgrade to Leopard this weekend. To grab the new version, either head to the Quicksilver homepage or open your Quicksilver preferences and check for an update. Quicksilver is freeware, Mac OS X only. Thanks CWB71!

Did the update kill anyone else's Web Search module? My two most used elements of QS have now died (namely quick searches of the PHP user manual and Google).
I haven't found a fix yet though.

edit
quicksilver makes me really jealous of mac, my dad uses it on his mac, and barely touches the mouse, it looks like he's working so much faster when he's flipping around apps and folders like that. i really wish there was an equivalent for linux...or even windows.

Their site seems to be down - perhaps the Lifehacker effect?

craig - got a lot of add-ons in firefox? and what else are you running at the time (including maybe things you loaded into startup items and then forgot about)?

I've had stability issues with quicksliver, mostly when I use it to open Firefox. Both apps will freeze after a short time. Any ideas?

jhave - what was the unstable part? the only thing i ever found that got in the way of quicksilver for me was google desktop (i still fear GD's resource-hoggacity) and lack of memory. maybe if you post what you were running on a regular basis, someone might have some experience with the same issue and give you a workaround.

I was unable to update Quicksilver from within Quicksilver itself. This might be because my day to day user is a standard user and not an admin user. No big deal, I just downloaded it from the Quicksilver web site. One note on that though. The page still says it's b51, but the download is build 3813 (b52).

Well, for me it's time to re-activate QS as it has been very unstable for a long time. I hope the Leopard version will be stable! I have no problem with sending usage data to the Blacktree gurus, so that they can improve it further!

am running QS on a Leopard Developer release, and notice that the QS icon can not be hidden from the dock. Not a major annoyance, but (like a lot of QS users) I like things clean and neat on my work environment.
Downloading the update now to check if it fixes that issue.

The new Spotlight (Leopard) goes after Quicksilver, no? It is supposedly much improved... I'm wondering if someone that had been in on the 10.5 betas can share some info.
