GIMP 2.4 Offers New Features, Improved Interface
Posted by Kevin Purdy at 9:00 PM on October 25, 2007
Windows/Mac/Linux: Open source image editing suite GIMP version 2.4 is now available and features a host of new goodies and long-awaited improvements. Chief among the new features are scaling for all kinds of brushes, intuitive selection and crop tools, a new object alignment guide and advanced tools like perspective cloning and lens distortion filters, but there are many more. GIMP is free, available already in some Linux repositories and for download for Windows and Mac users. For help getting started with GIMP, check out these intermediate video tutorials.

When are they going to to integrate a polygonal lasso tool with no anti-aliasing? Doing selections with the path tool is clunky and time consuming not to mention you can't turn the anti-aliasing off!

Has anybody came across any info whether they have fixed the issues with Wacom pen tablets? I'm not quite sure whether it's a GTK or a GIMP problem though.

@Swizzler121: Best free photo editing tool is a defensible claim. Best overall isn't.

@josef.sabl:
actually, in fact, if installing gimpshop is too difficult to install, here's a video tutorial. now you have no excuses whatsoever.

Looks like some old script-fu's that I had cause it to crash (XP), so went into GIMP directory and moved all the stuff left over from uninstalling an earlier version of Gimp. Still have to see if ufraw works.
Hm, yea, does start up faster. Cool.

@josef.sabl: You do realize that you can combine all the toolboxes into the main one, and the images are kept in other windows so you can work with more than one at a time. also some people say its worse on windows, but I have used it on every os and never noticed a difference, its still the best photo editing tool out there.

If you are short tempered, you will likely murder someone after working some minutes with with The Gimp.
Nothing is where you expect it, most functions are limited or totally unusable (like you can't select an picture you are editing as fill pattern - you have to export it first, and restart Gimp).
But the worst part: Good bye, right mouse button. Good bye, zoom with wheel.

The multi windows thing is just like Photoshop on the Mac. You do get used to it, but the palette layouts in Gimp leave an awful lot to be desired.
I am finally able to use the old laptop that I installed Ubuntu on for more of my day to day productivity needs. Gutsy fixed my wireless problem and I can use the laptop with a cord plugged in.
I am going to really try Gimp. It is important to me because as a photographer I spend a LOT of time in Photoshop on Mac and Windows PC's. Gimp has always been more of a frustration than it was worth. We'll see in a few weeks if I still feel that way.

The windows download on the main gimp.org site, as linked in your main article above, still shows as 2.2.17. I was able to find a sourceforge link for 2.4 through google. The link is via gimpusers.com, which also looks like a good site.
Here's the sourceforge link I found

@JMANGE:
Choose the 'Paths' tool. Click where you want the line to start, then click where you want the line to end. Choose 'Stroke Path'. Couldn't be much easier!

@Jmange: Click the start point, hold shift, click the end point. Took me a while to find too.

@josef.sabl: Yeah, it is annoying at times, but there is a "solution" to that problem.
A) Get Gimpshop ... it is supposed to act like Photoshop, but keep in mind that it is just an attempt to make it look like photoshop. OR/AND ...
B) Make liberal use of the docks that load by default. You can add as many menus as you want to each dock (to my knowledge, I have yet to load all in one massive sidebar). OR/AND
C) Save your window positions. It always helps me when my windows are always in the same place.
That being said, most of my work was done in Photoshop.

I'm still disapointed with it. There doesn't seem to be anyway to draw a simple straight line. I realize this program is mostly meant for photo editing but it seems to me that if I have to save the photo, then open it in another program just to draw a straight line than there is something wrong.

@Rich Bradshaw: Yeah, hope so too. Though I'm not sure how much we're actually missing between the RC and final version.
One of the new features I really like is the Foreground Select Tool. Draw a line round the object you want to select, scribble within the object's boundaries and hit Enter when you're done. From a few little experiments I tried it seems to work really well. ([www.siox.org] for more details of the algorithm implemented).

It also (seems) to run a LOT quicker when applying filters for example.

Oh yeah, Gutsy does have 2.4 r3 - hope this isn't like the Gaim RC with Feisty, and that it will update into version 2.4 final...

I am running Ubuntu Gutsy and it has GIMP 2.4 rc 3. These new things are all ok, but I am still waiting for REALLY NEW interface. This stupid multi window UI is annoying me :-(

It's a good app, but still very un-intuitive under windows.

Anyone have any thoughts on paint.net? I've never used it, but it's supposed to be a very good free editor.

It's very good for simple photo editing, but doesn't have the feature set of GIMP or Photoshop. If you just want to sort out the colours, crops, etc, it's fine.

@da5id_nz: But isn't that windows-only solution ?

@Desipenguin, yes it is.
@Stopsatgreen, according to the paint.net feature-set it has layers, cloning, gradients, curves, filters (redeye, etc) and now has support for the DirectDraw Surface (DDS) file type, which is popular in game development and game modding.. Maybe it's grown since you last looked? I'm a Photoshop man through and through anyway, so not likely to use, but maybe I'll download it at work and see what it can do.
