Archive All Your Cell Phone Calls with SmartJournal
Posted by Adam Pash at 10:30 PM on October 23, 2007
Windows only: Freeware application SmartJournal archives your Windows Mobile cell phone's call history—including incoming, outgoing, and missed calls—with Outlook's Journal, a lesser-known feature of the popular email client. After you've installed SmartJournal (which is in German—though that shouldn't affect any operation, since its actions are all behind the scenes), the program runs alongside ActiveSync and writes the phone number, the type of call (incoming, outgoing, missed), date, duration, and name of contact (when available) to the Outlook Journal. SmartJournal is freeware, Windows only, requires a Windows Mobile phone. My Windows Mobile device is on the fritz so I was unable to test this, but if you give it a try, let us know how it worked for you in the comments.

@SPK
You might want to take a look here....despite the link looking like it will only take you to the microsoft home page, it should take you to an explanation of Journal (Office 2003 version) :-)
[office.microsoft.com]
To sum it up, Journal is simply a 'time tracker' that records the amount of time you spend working on documents/e-mails/the phone. It is especially useful for those that charge by the hour, or need to keep a log of all correspondence (e.g. freelancers/attorneys etc).

Worked just fine. The next step is to apply the 8020 rule to people I don't really talk to, who are not emergency contacts.

what does Outlook Journal exactly do? Does it know my contacts and connect my calls to them?
Sorry to sound like a noob, but I've never used Journal....

Just tested this little application and it syncronized all my call history to my Outlook.

Just used it and I really like it, it will allow me to track business calls more easily, and it is just plain handy to have.

Great app - I search high and low for a long time for an easy way to extract my call log for billing purposes. This is the best one I've found, been using it for a year or so.

For those of us without a Windows Mobile phone, BitPim also has the ability to extract call history. Granted, your phone has to be compatible with BitPim, but it's compatible with a pretty large number of phones. And it's also freeware, which we all love. I don't think you can extract directly into Outlook (please correct me if I'm wrong), but there are other formats available.
