Build a Cheap DIY Dock for Your iPod Touch

DIY web site Instructables details how to make a free iPod touch dock with the MP3 player's slick packaging. As any iPod aficionado knows, iPods used to come bundled with docks. Now it seems only the iPod shuffle and iPhone get the privilege of free dockdom, which is why we've seen tonnes of DIY docks. Well, now we can add this DIY iPod touch dock to that list. Luckily its box is a fairly attractive starting point.

Not only that, but the white plastic thing that came with my classic is large enough to hold 2 classics, no way would my iPod stand up in it. Just lie it down flat, safer all around (especially with hard-drive iPods).
(Unless you buy an Apple dock with remote control, then I could see the appeal of having it upright.)

I don't think that using electrical tape to hold the connector to the bottom of the dock adaptor is going to hold up all that well to repeated use.

I knew there was a reason to keep the box for my Video iPod!

I did this for my 5.5G, used the Dock Adaptor to make a dock for it. I do recommend using hot glue on the dock connector to help it stick to the dock adapter over electrical tape though.

I never understood the concept of having a dock...who wants to "display" there iPod or iPhone like that anyway?
I was so happy when I realized I could plug the USB charger directly into the bottom of my phone and not have to carry around this dock every time I go off on safari. Baby elephant meat!

@clicknathan: it's nice if you want to play music off your ipod while at home. I keep my dock (from my 3G ipod) plugged into my speakers. Pop the ipod in, and you can charge and listen at the same time.

I agree with DA5ID_NZ. I am all for cheap and good looking, but this doesn't look that good. Not that I could come up with something better :)
