Screenshot Tour: Google Releases Gmail Mobile v. 1.5
Posted by Gina Trapani at 4:30 AM on October 16, 2007

Java-enabled handsets: Google's released an update to its excellent Gmail Mobile application, which gives you the live Gmail experience on your Java-enabled mobile phone. Version 1.5 adds the ability to search your mail, easy access to your contacts list, more efficient data usage that reduces bandwidth consumption (and load time), and more configurable settings. The downsides: 1.5 still doesn't support Google Apps for Your Domain, and by default it adds a hideous "Sent from Gmail for mobile" to your sent messages. (Visit the settings area to disable that.) After the jump, some screenshots.
Gmail Mobile 1.5
Gmail Mobile 1.5: Disable "Sent from Gmail for Mobile" in Settings
Gmail Mobile 1.5: Preload unread mail in Settings
Gmail Mobile 1.5: Search mail
Gmail Mobile 1.5: Choose which labels appear in the menu
Gmail Mobile 1.5: Customize your "Go to" menu
Gmail Mobile 1.5: Viewing labelled messages
Gmail Mobile 1.5: Contacts view
Gmail Mobile 1.5: "Go to" menu with selected labels
Gmail Mobile 1.5: Inbox view
Download the free Gmail Mobile to your handset by visiting gmail.com/app from its browser or your desktop browser. Thanks, dainalynn!

I've never been able to make v1.1 work properly on my Motorola. It's pretty frustrating, since using apps like that was the reason I bought that mobile phone. :(

Too bad that T-Mobile blocks third-party java apps from accessing their network.
*snicker* - really? Works for me :)

No update for Blackberry. Boo!
One thing I'd love for the Blackberry version would be some sort of notice on the main screen that you have new messages. Going to gmail and hitting 'refresh' seems pretty antiquated on my bb.

There doesn't seem to be that much between this and version 1.1 - I half-think that the upgrade was pushed more by the fact that my European version now calls itself Google Mail, rather than GMail - which of course was the point of a recent legal battle in Germany...

What a disappointment that so much of these Google extra don't work with Google apps. You'd think they'd want to nurture the paying segment they're trying to cultivate...

Version 1.5 doesn't work with Google Apps, however it is possible to get version 1.1.1 working just fine.
* Browse to 'gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gmail-g.jar' and download the version 1.0 client
* Enter your login information (your username should be your full Google Apps email address, i.e. me@mydomain.net
* You will get an error after the client tries to pull up the inbox. Just exit out of the application.
* Now go and download v1.1.1 by browsing to: gmail.com/app/v1.1.1/L1/gmail-g.jar
* After it installs select 'Keep existing data' on your phone when prompted
* Now when you start up gmail it will use the saved login credentials from the previous install and work just dandy
It's completely ridiculous that they won't support Google Apps, there doesn't seem to be any technical reason for it meh.

One thing that I have enjoyed about Gmail Mobile:
if you entered your contact's phone number when you were in Gmail, you can call the contact straight from Gmail Mobile. When you are reading the e-mail, just hit Menu and "Call" is the first thing on the list.
It looks like the new version allows you to navigate through multiple phone numbers too when you go into your contacts section.

If you have 2 or more gmail accounts and would like to access them all without logoff/login hussle, or to keep several gmail apps open simultaneously... here is how
[solnyshok.blogspot.com]
This should work for most Nokias and Sony Ericsson phones. WinMo phones most probably will not be able to run 2 Java apps at the same time.

Most of these features are already present in v1.1, which is what I am using on my Treo 650 with the IBM JVM. Has anyone been able to get v1.5 to work on the Palm? I don't want to risk my upgrade failing, especially with just a few new features (sig, saving drafts, etc).

I just confirmed that it works fine with Windows Mobile 5.0, except the Contact search feature is still buggy.

Nevermind, I was able to figure out:

Anybody that uses the IBM Java VM, that's the URL you'd want to paste in the install path.

I've got this up and running on my Samsung (Orange UK) but it doesn't actually ever send/receive any emails. I left it running for 10 minutes once, trying to send an email, and then got bored and deleted it. Now, I use Mobile Gmail (the web interface) with my WAP browser.

not being able to use cool things like this on my phone is one more reason why i hate Verizon.
I also have reasons why I love Verizon too. It is a complicated relationship.

Still - the whole reason I removed the last version from my Treo - no attachments! Bah! It was the only real reason to run the java and it didn't justify the huge amount of real estate java took up.
If Google Maps can be as sweet as it is sans java - WTF?
Don't get me wrong, I love java - but why should I need
it on one mobile google app and not the other?
