For all its 'the best code wins' meritocracy ethos, developers also need to be able to communicate and get their point of view across. Opinions will always differ on the best way to do things, and you and your work will be critiqued.
Here's an interesting article from Linux.com which talks to Linus Torvalds about dealing with conflict and differing opinions on code development.
