Always Show The Subject Line When Composing A Gmail Reply

Posted by Gina Trapani at 8:25 AM on October 9, 2008

Firefox with Greasemonkey only: Unlike most other email clients, when you reply to a message in Gmail, the subject line doesn't automatically become editable—you have to click the "Edit Subject" link in order to change it. If you edit your email subject in reply to messages frequently, but hate to have to reach for the mouse to start in Gmail, there's now a Greasemonkey user script for you. Download the Show Editable Subject user script for Gmail and give it a spin. If it seems to work for you (like my initial tests work here), then we'll include it as a new feature in Better Gmail 2's next release. The Show Editable Subject user script is a free (exclusive!) download right here, and works with Firefox and the Greasemonkey extension. Thanks for the suggestion, Andy!

Better Gmail 2 Gets LabelLinks4Gmail Plus Updates

Posted by Gina Trapani at 8:30 AM on October 1, 2008

All platforms with Firefox: Just uploaded the latest version of the Better Gmail 2 Firefox extension, which has several updates and one neat addition. Here's what's new:

  • New! The LabelLinks4Gmail user script is now available on the Sidebar tab. As Adam described, LabelLinks4Gmail lets you associate more than one label parent with child labels.
  • Updated! The GmailAgenda user script has been updated. It's called "Show Agenda" in Better Gmail 2's General tab. It now works with Gmail Apps as well as vanilla Gmail accounts.
  • Updated AND New! The Redesigned skin has been updated, and there is now a Redesigned-friendly version of Folders4Gmail which replaces the green plus sign with a slick little triangle with a dark background that looks much better coupled with Redesigned. Choose "Folders4Gmail (for Redesigned skin)" in the Sidebar tab to use the style and script in conjunction.
Download Better Gmail 2 version 0.7 here or use Firefox's Find Updates feature. (I've submitted the new version to Mozilla Add-ons; approval is pending.)

Greasemetal Brings (Some) User Scripts into Google Chrome

Posted by Kevin Purdy at 12:00 AM on September 11, 2008

Thanks to open-source hacker Kazuho Oku, early adopters of Google Chrome can now run the custom JavaScript bits known as Userscripts in the browser using Greasemetal. After you launch Greasemetal, the program launches Chrome and looks in a directory for user scripts to run. At the moment, Greasemetal can only run userscripts that have no Greasemonkey-specific functions—which kills out a lot of cool scrips like those in Better Gmail 2 and elsewhere, unfortunately—but can run most any script that works in Safari (with Greasekit) or Opera. Found a great user script that adds cool features to Chrome? Tell us about it in the comments.

LabelLinks4Gmail Nests Labels in Gmail and Then Some

Posted by Adam Pash at 9:00 AM on September 6, 2008

Firefox with Greasemonkey: The LabelLinks4Gmail Greasemonkey scripts creates nested labels in your Gmail sidebar. If the idea sounds familiar, that's probably because the previously mentioned Folders4Gmail script has been included with Better Gmail for quite some time. The main difference is that LabelLinks4Gmail soups up the sidebar so that clicking on a top level folder will reveal the contents of every label inside that folder—a feature missing from Folders4Gmail. Unfortunately the script doesn't use the same label naming structure as Folders4Gmail, so making the change isn't as smooth as it could be (in fact, it's more confusing all-around). However, if you've been dying for fuller features from the Folders4Gmail script, the LabelLinks4Gmail script is worth a look. Thanks Benjamin!

Make Google Reader Widescreen-Friendly

Posted by Gina Trapani at 12:51 AM on July 24, 2008

Firefox with Greasemonkey: The Google Reader for Wider Screens Greasemonkey script uses all the horizontal space available in GReader for better viewing on wide monitors. Install the script to take advantage of a wide browser window and scroll up and down less than you have to. The Google Reader for wider screens user script is a free download for Firefox with the Greasemonkey extension installed. Thanks, Andy!

Google Inline MP3 Player User Script Streams Linked MP3s

Posted by Adam Pash at 2:30 PM on May 20, 2008

Firefox with Greasemonkey: The Google Inline MP3 Player Greasemonkey script inserts Google Reader's MP3 Flash player next to any linked MP3 file you stumble onto while browsing. Simply click the [Play] link the script inserts next to the linked MP3 to toggle the player and start streaming the file. For example, once you install the script and reload this page, the Google Inline MP3 Player script should automatically insert a toggle link behind this link. Click it to listen to the MP3, and when you're done, click the Hide Player link to remove the player and return to your regularly scheduled browsing. Google Inline MP3 Player is an update to my original version, works anywhere you've installed Firefox and Greasemonkey. To install, just click the link below.

Gmail Addons Embeds Any Webapp in Gmail

Posted by Adam Pash at 7:55 AM on May 15, 2008

Firefox with Greasemonkey: The Gmail Addons Greasemonkey script embeds any page you specify inside Gmail's interface. By default, it comes with Google Calendar and the Google Talk gadget. (If this sounds familiar, it is—Gmail Addons is an update to the previously mentioned Enhance Gmail script.) Add any other web pages to Gmail by following the directions on the script homepage. If you're willing to dig into manually editing the script, Gmail Addons can embed Google Reader, Notebook, Docs, Remember the Milk, or virtually any other web page you'd like next to or below your inbox. Gmail Addons is free, requires the Greasemonkey extension to run.

Darken Gmail with Gmail Redesigned

Posted by Adam Pash at 12:00 PM on April 2, 2008

Firefox with Stylish: The Gmail Redesigned user style—which requires the Stylish extension to use—skins Gmail with an attractive, well laid-out, and completely overhauled look. Everything in the Gmail Redesigned interface is darker and a touch sleeker than the default Gmail interface, which hasn't changed all that much since Gmail launched four years ago today. Right now the developer is issuing updates to this style almost every day. Once Gmail Redesigned is complete, we hope to add it to the rest of the Gmail skins in an upcoming release of Better Gmail.

Filter FriendFeed by Service

Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on March 22, 2008

Firefox with Greasemonkey: The FriendFeed by Service Greasemonkey script does just what it sounds like, filtering results in your FriendFeed by service. The one pervasive concern lodged against FriendFeed when we reviewed it earlier this week is that FriendFeed introduces too much overflow with its all-in-one stream. With the FriendFeed by Service script installed, you can filter your feeds by service so you can see at a glance, for example, what music your friends are into on Last.fm or what bookmarks they made in Del.icio.us. FriendFeed by Service is free, requires Firefox with Greasemonkey.
