CNET Australia launches new music service
5:06PM Sarah Stokely | CNET has branched out from tech news and reviews to launch its own online music service, the snappily titled CNET.com.au Music Centre. So far the site offers over 90,000 free downloads and streams from over 17,000 indy artists. The site will feature music reviews by CNET music editors, and will also allow site users to rate artists and songs. While its music service is dominated by independent artists at the moment, the IT Journo website reported that CNET is negotiating with recording labels to feature
professional artists from 2008. The network is also planning to launch two TV sites early in 2008, TV.com and CNET TV. More »
Help identify mystery music at iden.tify.us
10:05AM Sarah Stokely | Here’s a website which will be fun for music nerds – and possibly useful when googling snippets of lyrics doesn’t help you identify a mystery piece of music.
The beta of iden.tify.us allows people to upload snippets of the songs they wish to identify, and any description they can provide (for example, the radio show or movie where they heard it). Visitors to the site can use the inbuilt audio player to listen to the snippets and then reply. I also noticed at least one YouTube clip uploaded for identification as well.
The site is advertising driven and asks that people identifying songs point to an online retailer who sells it (or use an affiliate referral code). I’m not sure if this is a *requirement* of using the site or just a recommendation.
Flash Player Version 9 is required to use the audio player, and it requires Javascript as well.
