Is a full-fledged, add-on-powered mobile browser something you want for your phone? Jay Sullivan, Mozilla’s Vice President for mobile, works every day to make it happen. Read what Sullivan has to say about Fennec, iPhones, Android, and all things mobile.
Mozilla’s bookmark- and password-syncing Firefox extension Weave updates to version 0.5 with performance improvements and some nice feature tweaks. Among them: Weave now waits to sync until you’re not active in the browser, supports changing passwords and passphrases, and adds support for Fennec on Windows Mobile. If you’re a Weave user, head on over to Mozilla Labs to grab the update. [Mozilla Labs]
Firefox: Prism, the Firefox add-on/stand-alone application that turns web sites into desktop windows, has hit a 1.0 release, promising to let you monitor and launch sites like Gmail from your Mac dock or Windows tray.
We’ve shown you how Mozilla Weave syncs your browsing experience—including bookmarks and passwords—in the past, but the folks at Mozilla are hoping to improve this experience with integration for automatic web site logins.
Firefox may have updated to 3.0.9 just last week with a few critical security fixes, but the folks at Mozilla are already pushing out 3.0.10—this time fixing a major stability issue and one security fix. Seems like a little bit of a bungle on Mozilla’s part to require two pushes so close together, but the plus side, of course, is that they do release important fixes with lightning speed. Mozilla opens the doors to their new Community Store, a partnership with t-shirt making company Zazzle, which lets you design and buy your own Firefox-themed shirt or grab one of the more popular designs from other users. Check out the gallery of featured designs here.
Mozilla is looking to streamline the process of multiple extension installation with a new webapp called Fashion Your Firefox. In a nutshell, Fashion Your Firefox identifies a handful of browsing types, from the “Finder and Seeker” (“I want to make finding information on the Web simpler and more relevant to me.”) to the Digital Pack Rat (“I want a hassle-free way to keep track of my favourite sites, bookmarks, blogs and, well, everything!”), then suggests popular extensions for each type of user. Just click through each list of suggestions, cherry pick the extensions you’re interested in, and then click Install my Add-Ons.
Windows/Mac/Linux (All platforms): Lightning and Sunbird, Mozilla’s calendar and task-management apps, have upgraded to 0.9 releases that fix hundreds of bugs and improve functionality. Along with general fixes to stability and memory consumption, the calendar views in both the stand-alone Sunbird and Thunderbird add-on Lightning have overhauled, and events that span multiple days now actually look like they do so. This is the last release Lightning will see as an add-on, as it’s being integrated into Thunderbird 3, so Thunderbird 2 users should definitely make the upgrade. Sunbird and Lightning are free downloads for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems; Google Calendar users, the essential Provider extension still works with this release.
