Beta Browser Speed Tests: Which Is Fastest?

Posted by Kevin Purdy at 1:55 AM on September 4, 2008

Google's new Chrome web browser beta is getting a lot of attention for its slick looks, helpful features, and performance, but how does it rank against the early releases of more established browsers? We've previously put the major browser releases to the speed test, but today we're measuring Chrome against the second beta of Internet Explorer 8, as well as the beta of Firefox 3's next iteration, 3.1. We tested tomorrow's browsers on startup and page-loading times, JavaScript and CSS performance, and, perhaps most importantly to the average user, memory use on launch and with lots of content loaded. Read on to get the scoop on which bleeding-edge beta has the edge in the browser time trials.

Anyone testing out the new, but familiar, features in IE8 Beta 2 might find themselves annoyed by constant mouse-over reminders of the browser's WebSlice function. Tech-Recipes.com shows how to turn the WebSlice nags off, using an option stashed deep in the preferences menu.

Six months after Beta 1 hit the streets, Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 to brave testers. The new beta includes features that make it look like a viable choice of modern browser, like a smart address bar (sound familiar?), tab grouping, private browsing, find in-page, suggested sites related to the current page, and more. Let's take a look at what's coming out of Redmond in the browser arena.

How to get rid of Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1

Australian Post Posted by Angus Kidman at 12:16 PM on August 28, 2008

Warning.jpg Having reported on the new beta of IE8, I was keen to get it installed, but soon confronted an error message telling me I had to dump beta 1. That looked tricky, since it didn't appear in the Vista uninstall programs dialogue, and Microsoft's own knowledge base article wasn't any help. However, as this handy blog post points out, Internet Explorer 8 is viewed by Vista as an update, not a program, so you need to click on 'View installed updates' in the program uninstall screen to locate and get rid of it. (And yes, of course you have to reboot.)

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 is out now

Australian Post Posted by Angus Kidman at 9:08 AM on August 28, 2008

Microsoft has released the second beta of Internet Explorer 8, promising "anyone who browses or works on the web will enjoy IE8 Beta 2." There wasn't anything in the first beta that would make me switch from Firefox 3 for my day-to-day browsing needs, but I'll be curious to see if they've improved on the sluggish performance of that initial build and how the rather obvious AwesomeBar clone plays in practice.

Fix Broken Hyperlinks in Outlook

Posted by Kevin Purdy at 11:00 PM on August 19, 2008

The Productivity Portfolio blog runs down three common fixes for the unexpected and highly frustrating bug of hyperlinks going non-helpful—meaning your browser doesn't open, goes to a dead page, or some other problem. The post notes that resetting your browser, re-registering DLL files, and resetting file-type handlers in Windows usually fixes the problem without a re-install, and runs down the steps to do so. The fixes mostly involve working with Internet Explorer, but, as pointed out, you can then just switch your default browser back to Firefox (phew!). .

Search Internet Explorer Favorites in Vista with a Shortcut

Posted by Kevin Purdy at 10:05 PM on July 17, 2008

If you've stored a good number of bookmarks (or, in Windows terms, "Favorites") in Internet Explorer and need quick access to them, the How-To Geek has you covered, at least in Windows Vista. By creating a simple saved search and creating a shortcut to it (so you or a launcher like Launchy can get at it), you'll have quick, search-able access to all your bookmarks. Anybody know a similarly simple method to searching favourites in Windows XP? Let's hear it in the comments.

IETester Renders Sites like Internet Explorer 5.5 Through 8

Posted by Adam Pash at 10:00 AM on June 9, 2008

Windows only: Freeware web browser IETester renders websites in IE 5.5, 6, 7, and even 8 beta 1 for testing purposes. This is more of a tool for the folks out there building web sites, but if you want a bit more robust method of testing your designs against different IE browsers without using websites like previously mentioned NetRenderer or BrowserShots, IETester looks like a winner. IETester is freeware, Windows only, requires IE 7.

Delicious bookmark addon now available for Internet Explorer

Australian Post Posted by Sarah Stokely at 6:16 PM on May 14, 2008

Social bookmarking tool Del.icio.us has had a Firefox extension for a while, and now Yahoo has released a beta version for Internet Explorer too. You can download the extension here.
Features include a del.icio.us Sidebar and Toolbar which will already be familiar to users of the Firefox version.
It promises "near instantaneous" searching with very large accounts of over 10,000 bookmarks. Other features include full del.icio.us sidebar and toolbar implementation with bookmark sync and typedown search.
It is just in beta at the moment, so the usual warnings apply. The Del.icio.us Internet Explorer Extension works with Internet Explorer 6 and above.[via]
