Amazon has begun shipping the international version of the Kindle this week, and the local market is already responding nervously. But if the device does succeed in making e-books more palatable, will it also lead to a rise in piracy?
Perhaps because there isn’t enough news about the Google Books deal already, Google announced that it would offer up more than half a million books to “any device with a browser” in early 2010.
When we asked earlier this week how readers preferred to access electronic books, we got a wide range of responses. An unscientific summary would be: there’s all sorts of devices in use, the iPhone is popular and we didn’t give enough credit to the Nintendo DS. But there’s clearly still room for a killer e-book reader, though whether that’s the Kindle seems open to debate.
