Windows XP Eee PC being sold off for $299

Lifehacker AU

Having sold off the Linux model of the original Eee PC earlier in the year at bargain prices, Catch Of The Day has now improbably got the Windows XP model on sale for an even lower $299 (plus postage, though PayPal buyers get that for free as well). While for stability and performance we think the Linux version is a better choice, the XP box does have some advantages — ability to access Next G is the first one that springs to mind. This is only listed as a 24-hour deal, though previous Eee offers on the site have tended to recur, and the “limit of 10 per customer” suggests there isn’t a massive shortage of stock. Check after the jump for five mods you can make to your new discounted Xbox to render it more useful and more efficient.

Want cheap games? Try overseas or eBay

Lifehacker AU

The Screen Play gaming column at The Age and SMH is regularly turned over to readers, and the latest contribution from James “DexX” Dominguez is a corker: a comparison of whether it’s cheaper to buy games (and controllers) from Australian stores, overseas importers or on eBay. The results unsurprisingly vary by platform, but there was hardly any context where local purchases were cheaper, even after factoring in postage from Hong Kong. Not good news for games retailers, who already have the challenges of piracy and the ludicrous games rating system to contend with. Cheap Eee PCs still up for grabs

Lifehacker AU

A week after first launching the deal and then extending it, Catch Of The Day still seems to be offering the original Eee PC for $327 (plus $15 shipping). If you want a portable notebook, or just an easy chance to experiment with Linux, it’s not going to get any cheaper than this.

Cheap Eee PC rides again

When we noted the $327 Eee PC earlier in the week, the offer ran out before many readers saw it — so we’re pleased to report that Catch Of The Day is reprising the deal. Clearly the original Eee is now in runout mode, so even after this offer runs out, shop around online to look for a deal — there’s no logic in paying $499 any more. More Aussie Eee tip goodness coming soon too.

Fancy an Eee PC for $327?

Lifehacker AU

If you’ve been tempted by the thought of an Eee PC, here’s a good local deal: Catch Of The Day is selling off the original 7.9in Xandros Linux model for $327 plus shipping. To our way of thinking, even at $499, the Eee is a killer buy; with this kind of saving, you’d want to get in quick.

Get 91% Off Microsoft Office Ultimate

A Microsoft student promotion that slashes 91% off a copy of Office Ultimate applies to anyone with a .edu email address—and most universities offer .edu addresses to their alumni for free. Microsoft Office Ultimate, which retails for $680, is available to students for only $60 until May 16th. But if you can snag a .edu address, you too can cash in on the deal—all you have to do is get yourself an alumni email address at your alma mater. The promotion’s web site says you have to prove you’re enrolled in coursework, but the New York Times reports that a senior VP at Microsoft confirmed all you need is an .edu email address. Let us know if you snag the deal and how it goes in the comments. The Ultimate Steal [via NYT]

AU – Microsoft’s Australian “It’s Not Cheating” site is promoting a student rate of $75 for Office Ultimate which is valid until 15 May.
