Australian Post Posted by Angus Kidman at 8:55 PM on August 12, 2008

AutoComplete.jpg
Dear Lifehacker, I want to learn more about using and enhancing the auto-complete feature in Outlook. My company doesn't let me download free software for use on my office computer, but I am computer literate. Any hints? Thanks, Mike

Ask Lifehacker: How should I prepare for my new Eee PC?

Australian Post Posted by Angus Kidman at 5:19 PM on July 22, 2008

EeePC_901_black_R_open_Stand_02_US_336x376.jpg
Dear Lifehacker,
I was hoping I could put a question to the Lifehacker community. I know a lot of folks out there are Eee PC owners, and I've finally caved and ordered myself a 901 (it's a 20GB Linux model -- I may switch distro as I run Ubuntu/XP on my main rig). I'm curious about whether there's anything I should do/gather in preparation, while I wait for my black beauty to be delivered. Essentially, it will put my waiting-for-a-new-toy-anxiety on hold, and I'll be that little bit more organised when it actually gets here. I realise there are many Lifehacker posts that are Eee-centric already, however they're mostly for taking it apart or using it, once you have it. Any advice? Cheers, Paul C

How Do I Delete about:config Entries?

Posted by Gina Trapani at 1:30 AM on July 2, 2008

Dear Lifehacker,
Even though it may "void my warranty," I've made changes in Firefox's about:config area based on tweaks you've published and ones I've seen elsewhere. Problem is, at some point I mis-entered one, and I can't seem to delete it. I can only edit the value in about:config, but I can't remove the entry entirely. I know it probably isn't a big deal, but just in case, because I hate knowing it's there: Is there any way to delete an about:config entry in Firefox?

How Can I Find Out If a File Really Has a Virus?

Posted by Adam Pash at 7:00 AM on June 27, 2008

Dear Lifehacker,
I recently downloaded a program recommended by Lifehacker, and after I installed it, my antivirus program yelled bloody murder and flagged it as a virus. No one else in the comments has reported similar findings, and my antivirus application has reported false positives before. I love my AV app, but is there a better way I can verify whether or not a file really contains a virus?

How Can I Create a Keyboard Shortcut to Firefox's Add-ons Window?

Posted by Adam Pash at 7:00 AM on June 25, 2008

Dear Lifehacker,
As we all know, the absolute greatest thing about Firefox is its extensibility, so why is it that the Firefox Add-ons window seems to be the only thing I can't get to with a keyboard shortcut? Now that the Add-ons window has the Get Add-ons tab in Firefox 3, there's even more reason I want to be able to get there quickly. How can I create my own keyboard shortcut to my Firefox extensions?

Resurrect Images from My Web Browser Cache?

Posted by Gina Trapani at 9:00 PM on May 1, 2008

Dear Lifehacker,
While I was surfing the web the other day I saw this incredible photograph which I stupidly didn't save to my computer. (No, it wasn't that kind of photograph.) Still, now I'm regretting not saving my own copy, because the picture is no longer available online. But if I viewed it in my browser, that means I did actually download it, right? If it's saved on my hard drive somewhere, how and where do I find it?

Reuse Another Computer's Windows XP Disc?

Posted by Gina Trapani at 10:00 AM on March 27, 2008

Dear Lifehacker,
I have two Dell computers here—one running Windows 2000 and one running Windows XP. The XP machine is old and broken down, so I'm going to gut it for parts. I have the Dell-branded Windows XP installation disc that came with it, and I was wondering—can I use it to format and install XP on the Windows 2000 PC? I have the Dell drivers discs for both computers, and the XP licence key on the label stuck to the computer.

Create Individual Tracks from One Long Concert Track in iTunes

Posted by Adam Pash at 11:00 AM on March 21, 2008

Dear Lifehacker,
I've got lots of concert tracks in iTunes that are basically one long recording with no separation between tracks. Is there a way to split it up into individual tracks in iTunes? I've looked, but I don't see any iTunes feature that appears to handle this.
Sincerely,
Longing for Shorter

Dear Longing,
It is possible to do what you want within iTunes, but you're right—iTunes doesn't make it obvious how. In fact, it's more of an iTunes hack than an intended feature, but either way, here's how it works.

Firefox Quick Search for Lifehacker.com?

Posted by Gina Trapani at 1:00 AM on March 18, 2008

Dear Lifehacker,
I'm trying to make a keyword search bookmark for Lifehacker.com in Firefox, but it's not working. In the address bar, I can type http://lifehacker.com/search/myterm/ and it'll search for "myterm" but when I make a quick search bookmark for this, using http://lifehacker.com/search/%s/, I get a "Bad Request" error since Firefox doesn't replace the %s with the actual search term. All my other keyword search bookmarks work great. Am I doing something wrong?

Back to My Mac from a PC?

Posted by Adam Pash at 6:00 AM on March 13, 2008

Reader Ryan writes to ask:

I loved your column about setting up Back to My Mac for free, but I've got a Mac at home and a Windows PC at work, so what I really want is to get Back to My Mac from a Windows PC. Is it possible to get Back to My Mac from Windows?
Since the tools we used in our setup are really just versions of VNC and FTP tools baked into Leopard, and VNC and FTP are about as old and widely supported as time itself, it most certainly is. Check out the details for getting back to your Mac from a Windows computer after the jump.
