tree /F >tree.txt
iPhone Pizza Apps To Explode Next Month
October 20th, 2009 at 6:15 PMExcellent, now that they have made it easier to order, the next step is making pizzas which are palatable enough that I will want to order them.
Persistence Is Key To iPod Music Copying
August 26th, 2009 at 2:50 PM@poedgirl
I was going to say the same thing, I’ve used that method in the past. I find it works better if iTunes isn’t even installed (or shut it down and stop the iTunes helper service).
Using a Virtual Machine with default USB Mass Storage drivers and no iTunes works the best.
GPS On Your Mobile Phone Illegal In Cars
August 26th, 2009 at 10:17 AMInteresting discussion in the comments there, these rules are not legally binding, they are an attempt to get the states to agree on national road rules (something which since moving to WA I think is needed in this country).
One of the most worrying parts of that document is that motorcyclists are banned from using GPS devices entirely, phone or not. Garmin I know sells dedicated motorbike GPS devices, and they are arguably more useful on a bike than in a car where you can use a paper map.
Internode Shows Call Wait Times On Its Site
August 18th, 2009 at 11:30 AMI think this is a great idea for other companies to look at doing, but for an ISP not so useful.
The main reason I would call my ISP is when the connection is not working and then I wouldn’t be able to get to the page telling me the wait times.
Avoid Extra Charges That Inflate Air Ticket Prices
August 10th, 2009 at 12:37 PMI have some mates that managed to get tickets from Perth -> Melbourne return, including excess baggage of about 20kg each for rock-climbing gear, for about $320 per person with Tiger. Apparently they allow you to book the number of bags you want when you book the tickets, a really nice service in my opinion.
How Selfish Users Can Mess With Off-Peak ISP Deals
August 6th, 2009 at 12:07 PM“If your ISP offers separate peak and off-peak download limits, it makes sense to schedule large downloads to happen overnight and not risk being shaped or paying excess fees each month.”
That is if your ISP allows this behaviour. I remember reading somewhere in iiNet’s terms of service that scheduling software is not allowed. Now that is an even worse stance than Exetel’s
3 Tweaks Pricing As Its iPhone Launch Looms
July 16th, 2009 at 1:22 PMStill with the massive caveat that data downloaded on the Telstra network is charged at 50c/MB from the terms and conditions. Is it too much to ask for mobile Internet to be mobile?
How Do Your University's Online Services Rate?
July 8th, 2009 at 3:42 PMUWA has a much better online experience now than when I was in undergrad over East. That could of course be that things have improved in the last few years.
There is wireless all over campus, however the limits are bad (10MB/day) unless you are willing to pay for more ($6/GB). VPN access for off-campus access to library resources is really useful for postgrad work. There are strange quirks though that you have to log-in through the proxy to search the website as search results are provided by Google, and the webmail portal is hopeless.
Lecture material is really good, you can podcast audio or even video recordings of many lectures (up to the individual subject co-ordinator) which I would have killed for in undergrad with the clashes I had to work around.
Most of the online services are moving to a single-sign-on model to help remembering passwords. Figuring out which service to log onto to find the right info is still a bit hard, but it is much better than the dark ages of 5 years ago.
Windows 7 Australian Upgrade Pricing: Unclear, Expensive
June 26th, 2009 at 11:36 AMOuch!
I hope student pricing is sensible because I have two computers running the RC at the moment that I would love to keep running 7 on. One is a netbook that I dread rolling back to XP, and Vista is not an option for it.
There is no way I am spending $800 to upgrade two machines, and home premium is missing a few crucial features.
Where is the Family Pack product pricing Microsoft? You do it for Office.
