What Drives Your Choice Of Wi-Fi Versus 3G?
October 20th, 2009 at 4:23 PMThere’s have to be no free Wi-Fi, and no connection possible using my 3G connection for me to even THINK about paying. I can’t see how it’d be different for anyone else who actually has a 3G service available… as that’s exactly what it’s for.

Make A Smoke Alarm Clock To Wake Even The Soundest Sleeper
August 21st, 2009 at 11:17 AMI have a PC in my room hooked up to a set of speakers directly under the head of my bed… It’s in sleep mode (S3) most of the time until about 8am when it plays randomly from my music collection for 25mins at sufficient volume for me not to be able to sleep through it. It’s pretty loud.
Is The Desktop PC Dead?
June 30th, 2009 at 9:28 AMDesktop PCs FTW. On the road I use a laptop of course, but at home, nothing better:
- they almost never overheat
- I find them much more comfortable than a laptop screen
- tidier than a frankenstein of docks and cables for a laptop
- cheaper
- much more configurable specifications
- faster per dollar
- I can’t fit 3TB in a laptop (yet) and adding endless USB enclosures adds to the size of the setup and cuts the power-savings of a laptop anyway
- easier and more reliable to run a HTPC/server on for home use
I heart my desktop.
Optus Wants $9.99 A Month For iPhone Tethering
June 18th, 2009 at 3:41 PMThis is ridiculous – almost any phone you pick up with bluetooth has support for tethering to use as a modem, and you don’t have to pay an extra ‘fee’ to use it… as you shouldn’t because it’s a capability of the phone not the network!
Optus didn’t set up anything extra on their network just so that people can tether their phones as modems – so why should they be allowed to charge a fee for the priveledge that the phone manufacturer has provided?
It’s comparable to if Telstra started charging people a monthly fee for using speakerphone on a landline telephone that already has speakerphone. BAH! Nuts to you Optus.
Master The Art Of Web Commuting
June 17th, 2009 at 2:05 PMResist the temptation to work out of ordinary hours, or communicate this change of schedule to colleagues and superiors that need to know.
If you start too early, you run the risk of having to work later because your colleagues (and bosses) won’t recognise that. They’ll be in full swing by mid-afternoon – and you’ll be winding down for the day… just when that important task comes through over email.
If you start too much later than everyone on-site, if anything goes pear-shaped you have less time to fix it (or get others to fix the problem from their end), and your bosses will probably want that report by THEIR end of the day – not your 11pm deadline after “Dancing With The Stars”.
DVD Rip Automates One-Click DVD Ripping
June 16th, 2009 at 8:25 PM“On another note, what about adding and option to rip to xvid?”
There is one – Handbrake. No point reinventing the wheel.
For it’s intended purpose, this application is fine. Nice job.
JB Hi-Fi To Ditch CD Singles
June 11th, 2009 at 6:46 PMGreat idea… what a waste of a whole CD for a single and a couple of B sides. Think of the positives in terms of saved landfill alone.
If good lossless alternatives are promoted I don’t see why this would have a negative effect on people that like to buy their music as singles a-la-iTunes. Likely better for the environment and probably cheaper for the consumer too.
