Microsoft's Messy WA Daylight Saving Fix
November 21st, 2009 at 2:14 PMIt is holiday season. Getting anything done in the US between Thanksgiving and New Year is about as productive as getting anything done in Oz between mid December and end of January.
MS would also be testing patches for XP, Vista and Win7.
Firefox 3.6 Beta 3 Available With 90+ Bugs Squashed
November 19th, 2009 at 4:06 PMAny improvement on the still horrendous memory usage? Or the way it allows Facebook chat windows to steal focus from *all* Firefox tabs and windows?
What Happens To Your Online Accounts When You Die?
November 19th, 2009 at 4:00 PMRealistically once you have access to someone’s primary email account you can gain access to their social networking accounts simply by requesting a password reset.
When one of my cousins died recently I helped her father run through procedures to access her online account. Going through her email was important due to the number of recurring financial transactions that were recorded there. Easier to close these down quickly via email rather than try to reverse engineer them over a space of months from bank and credit card statements.
Turning her Facebook account into a memorial page provided not only spread the news about her death, but a way for scattered friends to pay their respects, share stories and photos.
mmKeys.dll Makes Media Keys Work Properly With iTunes
November 18th, 2009 at 4:31 PMPoor cousin? It’s the red-headed stepchild with a payload of Apple-ware that it tries to insert each month. If anything makes me switch away from using an iPhone it’s the aggravation of iTunes (currently snatching foreground focus every 20-30 seconds).
TV Networks Taking Some Notice Of Bloggers
November 17th, 2009 at 1:32 PMWhat the local stations also fail to realise is that the community of watchers around a hit series is global and immediate.
For a series with a story arc, it’s no good getting (say) Battlestar Galactica the next year or a few months down the track when the blogosphere or even magazines are reporting spoilers way in advance.
Every time the stations fiddle with the timetable or stop showing a series midway, it just sends another cohort of watchers to Channel BT.
SuperSeeker Finds Your Forgotten Superannuation Payments
November 12th, 2009 at 2:30 PMI discovered $8.02 at the unclaimed super fund!! Yay!

Where is the download link? There’s nothing on the deviantART page…
Keep Dishonest Landlords At Bay With Your Camera
November 8th, 2009 at 10:59 AMEmailing yourself a copy of photos to a webmail account so that they have extra dated evidence is also useful.
The Cost Of Moving Overseas
November 5th, 2009 at 8:01 AMIf you’re taking a pet dog or cat with you, you need to be planning at least 6 months out so that rabies vaccinations can be put in place. Talk to a vet or a pet transport company *immediately*.
For a large dog, airfare can run to thousands of dollars.
Add Your Facebook Events To Google Calendar
October 29th, 2009 at 11:46 AMI’ve been running my FB events through Google Calendar for over a year (in Australia) and never run into timezone issues.

Make A DIY Kindle From A Tablet PC
October 17th, 2009 at 4:28 PMThe article does say look for an older model like these > 5yr old examples. These tablets come bundled with Windows XP Tablet Edition (a superset of XP Pro), so the OEM cost hardly enters into it.

AVG 9 Free Now Ready For Download
October 17th, 2009 at 10:04 AMBe careful on their download link page, as the “recommended” link via CNet still takes you to an 8.x version of AVG-Free to download.
Only the link from AVG direct has v9
Microsoft's Messy WA Daylight Saving Fix
October 16th, 2009 at 3:33 PM>Great job there MS, assuming the outcome of a referendum.
Whatever decision it made, it was assuming the outcome of a referendum. Going with national consistency is certainly a sensible assumption to make if you have to make one.
Make A DIY Kindle From A Tablet PC
October 16th, 2009 at 9:35 AMSix years ago I was using one of these old Motion Computing tablets partly as an e-reader and partly for playback of sheet-music PDFs as it sits nicely at a piano. Lovely looking unit, but mine’s been sitting unloved on a shelf for a few years now
Best Tools For Reading And Creating PDFs
October 15th, 2009 at 3:14 PMCute PDF mentioned above is my favourite free creator
For editing I use PDF Annotator – almost essential if you have a Tablet PC. Besides allowing me to ink or type on a PDF page, it also allows for page operations like deletion or appending documents. It’s very useful for signing documents without having to print them out and mail/fax them.
Top 5 Ways To Save Money On Books
October 15th, 2009 at 3:07 PMThe etailer would be bookdepository.com
I’ve been using bookfinder.com for about a decade as my meta-search engine.
Five Best Windows Task Manager Alternatives
October 12th, 2009 at 9:54 AMExtended Task manager also fails to launch on 32-bit Windows 7 (error -9). From their forums, they suggest setting it to Vista compatibility mode, which does seem to work.
Improve Google Maps By Reporting Problems
October 8th, 2009 at 4:29 PMI’ve reported a number of problems via the Google Maps forum but they’ve never been corrected either. Some are fairly major, like clicking on an Australian map location in Google search results and being taken to a US map location. There are a number of other contexts where Google Maps overrides Australian settings to take you to a US location.
When iPods Are A Traffic Risk
October 6th, 2009 at 10:46 AMI see pedestrians and cyclists doing dumb things on the road in front of me everyday. In one case a pedestrian simply walked out in front of peak hour traffic in King St Newtown at night. He was wearing black and I swear the only thing I saw was the white of an iPod earpiece. Similarly, cyclists bearing no lights and wearing no reflective gear are adding to the mayhem they cause by wearing in-ear headphones.
Wasn’t the world’s first noted such fatality an Australian girl on a bike in London?
Which Google Annoyances Need Fixing?
September 30th, 2009 at 11:00 AM1) If you’re overseas, Google ignores your OS, browser and Google account language preferences to use the dominant language at the IP address you’re querying on. Makes life hellish for tourists and business travellers.
2) The Google language page has the names of all languages localized into the current language. This is NOT helpful. If you know another language then you know its local name. If your page is stuck in the wrong language then you may not know the way your language is named in that language (even English can be hard to find).
3) Google Calendar events will by default link to Google Maps in US locations unless you fully qualify your non-US event with a country. It won’t work off your account settings, the google domain you’re on, or godhelpus even the IP address. US trumps everything.

Shut Your Eyes When Brushing For Whiter Teeth
September 8th, 2009 at 9:59 PMI’ve been using a sonic electric toothbrush for 4 years and I just tend to zone out while it does its work. My dentist has never had less to do.
