Five Best Software Update Tools

CNET just launched their tech tracker. Apart from the fact it requires you to creat a cnet login, it’s great. I’ve tried sumo and hippo and this seems to be the best. Secunia PSI is also something I run because of its focus on security.

Five Best Windows Task Manager Alternatives

Process Hacker FTW. After that, Process explorer.

Google Makes Shift To reCAPTCHA By Buying It

Go Google. ReCAPTCHA is a great project for sure.

Browser Chooser Asks You Which Browser To Open New Links In

I wrote a similar c# program to look at the link and then open an appropriate browser. At this point I’ve only hard coded the browser choices into the program. If anyone’s interested though let me know.

Use Google Reader As Your Own Private Google

Can’t believe some people think RSS is dead. I mean really? Just because twitter is now around or something?

Five Best Disk Defragmenters

I find it so hard to compare defrag utilities when it’s so hard to measure how ‘good a job’ each one has done – any ideas?

Use Google Calendar To Send Free SMS

That sounds like a lot of work to be honest

Make Firefox Faster By Vacuuming Your Database

Just FYI – after copying and pasting the URL you’ll need to change
”VACUUM”
to
“VACUUM”

Default Programs Editor Changes File Associations With Ease

Can’t download this at work, but can someone confirm for me that this is similar to nirsoft shellexview and the like?

Five Best Video Players

VLC all the way, baby. Having said that I haven’t yet tried XMBC – although I though that was more of a media server-type solution?

TrackEngine Tells You When Sites Change

Ah, hate to point out the obvious, but if you’re not a ‘toolbar fan’ you can just store the bookmarklet in your bookmarks like everything else?

Oh, and not too sure I’d count cutting journalism reporting a service that was registered in 31-jan-2000 according to whois.

Never Use Inactive Webmail As Your Secondary Email Account

Question – does anyone know if logging into the IMAP or POP3 server counts as “logging into” the service for the purposes of keeping it active?

FeedDemon, NetNewsWire To Sync Exclusively With Google Reader

I’m sorry, but I for one will be sorry to see Newsgator Online go. Maybe it’s the fact that I’ve used it every day for the past few years that will make me miss it.

Ironically, I did check out Google Reader about a year ago, but decided to stick with Newsgator because I liked the (back then) WinMo client.

I go my wife using it, and she’s stuck with it ever since too.

It will be missed.

Speed Up Slow Firefox 3.5 Windows Start-Ups

This bug is now resolved, just FYI. So no need to do this now.
