Stop Paying For Windows Security; Microsoft's Security Tools Are Good Enough

If knives are so good, why aren’t you using one to eat your cereal?

Deadset. Sometimes you wonder.

Dishwasher Detergent Soak Cleans Dishes Overnight

“Graduated” to tablets? “Been sucked in by marketing”, more like.

Know When To Use Alkaline Versus Rechargeable Batteries

Sorry, but I’ve got no idea why you’re higlighting this column. It mentions LSD batteries only in the comments, and just wipes them there anytway, dsespite the fact that they invalidate several of his points.

People who have no idea about batteries probably shouldn’t write about them, and lifehacker CERTAINLY shouldn’t point people at the article as if it has some sort of clue.

Remember The Milk Simplifies Task Creation With Smart Add

Good to see they’ve finally done some dev work on it, but the iPhone app is still horrendously inefficient, and shows no signs of improving.

GoogleMonkeyR Turns Off Google Search Results Tracking And More

Oooops, now it’s working, despite not being setup for it in the config. I guess that’s good.

When Are Cheap, Fast Gadgets Good Enough For You?

The most obvious and widespread case of this is Apple’s bundled iPhone headphones. Utter garbage, and millions use them.

Trillian Astra Leaves Beta, Rolls Out Bug-Fixes And Features Galore

As I said, if you want to see stuff, it’s entirely possible to do so.

Trillian Astra Leaves Beta, Rolls Out Bug-Fixes And Features Galore

If you want to see conspiracy theories around every corner, I guess you will, as these posts demonstrated. Deadset.

Exercise Won't Make You Thin, Just Healthy

It’s a VERY poorly written article (read it linked off another blog the other day).

What Works: The Web Way Vs. The Wave Way

Given that wasn’t what the article was about, that’s not all that surrprising.

What FlyBuys And Everyday Rewards Get You These Days

I love the idea that the loyalty programs are somehow “free”.

Squeeze Every Ounce Of Power From Your Disposable Batteries

Just buy good quality NiMH batteries and a good quality charger and you’re sorted. And you’re green.

Win/win.

Is The Desktop PC Dead?

Talk about a false argument – why is it one or the other? I’ve got both. Good laptop, but still much prefer the desktop for any number of reasons.

Firefox 3.5 Officially Available For Download

Once TMP & Evernote work with it (oh, and VertTabBar), I’ll be moving to it. Not until then, though.

Microsoft Security Essentials (AKA Morro) Available For Download

Except if your in Australia, when it won’t let you download it, so not much point having it on LHA.

iPhone 3.0 Update Available For Download

Optus sent me an email about this a few hours ago (I signed up to see what the delay was on them letting people know, and was amazed that it didn’t take them a a week), but there’s no mention of tethering costs.

Nor is there any mention of it in their FAQ.

“What is the point of having a FAQ if it doesn’t even mention, let alone answer, the MAIN question – is Optus going to rip me for even more cash if I tether my notebook despite me already paying $140/month?’”

We’ll see if they reply to that email :-)

Windows 7 Reality Check: It Can Still Suck Big Time

Im running W7 on the (quad-core, 4GB, 8800GT) desktop at home and here on the laptop (Dell XPS Studio 16, 8GB, SSD, RGBLED screen) and it’s terrific on both. Networking is seamless, and it’s a huge amount easier to hookup to the iPhone for use as a modem than my 5-month-old MBP was, weird as that sounds.

Make Your Packed Lunch More Appealing

You know, a photo of a HEALTHY lunch at the top might be a better idea…

Making The Most Of The Microsoft Office 2007 Ribbon

Get into the new Office (2010) – you can modify the ribbon in that.

Facebook Purity Removes Eye-Gouging Quiz Updates

Been using this for a week or two now – highly recommended.

My Quest For The Mac's Keyboard Shortcut Soul

Multiclutch and the great trackpad are the two things I miss from my MBP.

The other key that is missing, and drove totally nuts (I’m a journalist), is a proper delete key. Fn-Delete (which is actually a backspace key, anyway), is a complete PITA compared to a proper key. (Agree with everything else, espeially the lack of PgUp/PgDn.)

Why I Didn't Buy A Mac

@vik – there is no way that Entourage is even close to Outlook, I’m afraid.

Why I Didn't Buy A Mac

Having used Windows since 2.11, when I was buying a new laptop in November I bought a MacBook Pro.

Earlier this week I took delivery of my new Dell XPS Studio 16 and couldn’t be happier to be back in Windows.

(MBP now up for sale.)

Like Angus, my need for Outlook (or a good email program that works with Exchange, Entourage is rubbish for anything meaningful) meant I had to run Fusion.

Given that I didn’t find OS-X any less crash-prone than XP/Vista/W7, it was about software, and the OSX is seriously behind.

Office 2007 >>> Office 2008
Outlook 2007 >>> Mail/Entourage
Soundforge >>> Soundbooth CS4
Lightroom = Lightroom
CS4 = CS4
Image management (generally) much better on Windows
Xplorer2 >>> Finder, Forklift, Pathfinder
Flash my Brain = Flash my Brain
iTunes=iTunes
FeedDemon >>> NetNewsWire
Digsby >>> Adium

And so on.

Love the attemps at distraction via the “I perceive Toshiba is evil and buying you gear” claims. Very funny, but not much of a smokescreen.

The Dell smashes the MBP in performance, screen, etc. The way the power attaches with the MBP is nicer, though.
