Cheer Up With The Trebek Affirmation Soundboard

“No one offers encouragement quite like Alex Trebek,” says designer and 30-year Jeopardy! watcher Rex Sorgatz. Inspired by Trebek’s fight with pancreatic cancer, and to fight the myth that Trebek is a “smug snob,” Sorgatz built the Trebek Affirmation Soundboard.

Click any square on this Jeopardy! board and get a word of encouragement from Trebek, taken from an episode of the show. It’s like an advent calendar for a month of good days. One square says “Boy aren’t you off to a great start!” One says “Good for you!” Many say “Yes!” There’s even a category for comforting words for contestants who get it wrong.

As Sorgatz says in a Twitter thread about the project, “Trebek seems to truly love giving away money. Instead of chiding contestants (as the myth often alleges), he vigorously roots for them.” Trebek wants you to succeed. He wants us all to succeed.

There are three extra sounds hidden on the page, outside the board. Click around and find them.

Sorgatz (a friend of mine, full disclosure) is a creative appreciator of media and of culture high and low; his email newsletter Recs is a high-density stream of recommendations and commentaries, and an occasional source for Lifehacker.
