Use A Short Mantra To Stick To Your Goals

A lot of us know that saying “phone, wallet, keys” before we walk out the door can remind us of what we don’t want to leave behind. Well, it turns out that developing similar mantras for other areas of our lives can help us focus on our goals.

As psychotherapist Amy Morin explains, in Inc.:

When you’re filled with self-doubt or your brain is tempting you to cave, it’s hard to resist. Thinking, “But it will taste good,” or “You deserve to have this,” makes it hard to stay strong.

One of the best ways to drown out those thoughts is to develop a mantra that you can repeat over and over again.

Ideally, this mantra should be short, punchy, and personally motivating. Morin cites a woman she worked with who started saying “self-respect” every time she was tempted to text her ex-boyfriend. (It’s worth noting that you don’t have to say your mantra aloud.)

I’ve got a handful of mantras I use in my own life, and they really are the “phone, wallet, keys” of, like, reminding me who I am. If you’ve developed similar mantras, have they also helped you stick to your goals and values?
