Three Ingredient Happy Hour: A Muddle-Free Faux-Jito

Happy weekend, my friends, and welcome back to 3-Ingredient Happy Hour, the weekly drink column featuring super simple yet delicious libations. This week we’re shaking up a muddle-free, streamlined take on the minty mojito.

One of the great things about being a regular at an establishment that serves cocktails is that I get to try many “test” drinks, which is great for both my wallet and this column. So when Jason (the one who looks like Ryan Gosling) asked me if I’d like to try a “muddle-free mojito” he was working on, I was like “duh, yes.”

Rather than using a whole bunch of mint leaves and sugar, Jason’s drink gets both its sweetness and bracing, minty flavour from Branca Menta, the more accessible cousin of Fernet. Jason tops his with sparkling water for a truer mojito experience, but that would put us at four ingredients, so we adjusted the ratios slightly to make a drink that is somewhere in between a mojito and a daiquiri, and it is delicious. To make it, you will need:

  • 45ml ounces Menta Branca
  • 30ml white rum
  • 22ml fresh lime juice

Add everything to a shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously until your shaker becomes to cold to hold. Strain into a coupe glass, and enjoy the fact that you didn’t have to muddle a single mint leaf. If you do feel like adding some sparkling water, decrease the lime to 15ml, strain into a Collins glass filled with ice, and top with said water.
