3-Ingredient Happy Hour: The Rum Manhattan

3-Ingredient Happy Hour: The Rum Manhattan

Happy weekend, everyone, and welcome back to 3-Ingredient Happy Hour, the weekly drink column featuring super simple yet delicious libations. This week we’re mixing up a variation on the iconic Manhattan by swapping out the standard rye whiskey for rum.

I have nothing against whiskey (obviously), but sometimes I just want to loosen things up just slightly with a more tropical spirit and using rum in a Manhattan lets you get loose without going “full daiquiri”. To make one, you simply need:

  • 55mL rum (single-barrel or aged is preferred)
  • 25mL sweet vermouth (Carpano Antica if you want to treat yourself)
  • A few dashes of aromatic bitters

Add everything to a mixing glass filled with ice and stir until well chilled. Strain into a coupe, garnish with an orange twist if you dare to up your ingredient count and sip a slightly tropical, but still very serious, libation.
