Here’s Why You Should Mute Your Phone When On Hold

For one reason or another, there comes a point in everyone’s life where you have to call technical support. Maybe your power’s been inadvertently shut off, your pay TV is on the fritz, or your flight’s been delayed. But you should keep the rage and profane retorts to a minimum, especially when you’re on hold. Chances are, they can still hear you.

According to Redditor icebreakercardgame, your being placed on hold doesn’t necessarily silence your phone’s speaker on the other end. Telemarketers, support technicians, and anyone else on the other side can most likely still hear your ranting and raving. Some Reddit comments even told stories of insurance claims turning sour based on what was said while “on hold”.

Here’s How To Get Rid Of Me.” excerpt=”I’ve worked for a telemarketing company for two years and made a lot of unwanted calls. I have to keep making them because most people don’t know how to get rid of us, but the right approach can make all the difference. Here’s how you can get rid of telemarketers like me and save us both a lot of time.”]

So how can you make sure your flippant remarks aren’t hurting your chances of walking away with an issue resolved? For one, you should avoid reacting based on the actions of others. Nothing good can come from flying off the cuff, especially when you’re dealing with someone who wants to help.

Of course, if you still want to talk smack about your interrupted service and not offend anyone, you can always hit the mute button on your phone. You’ll be able to hear when the hold music comes to a close, and you can say whatever foul-mouthed words you’d like in the meantime.
