How To Make Taco Shells Entirely Out Of Bacon

How To Make Taco Shells Entirely Out Of Bacon

“You know what would make this 2AM taco perfect? Bacon. No wait, the whole taco shell… just bacon.” I imagine that’s the kind of thought process that would inspire someone to make this. And now The Backyard BBQ Show shows you how it’s done.

You need a barbecue and lots of bacon. It’s “real easy,” the video begins, but the first step actually requires some prior knowledge on weaving 15 strips of raw bacon together. Once woven together, lay it out on baking paper, then place another sheet of baking paper over to begin moulding a taco shape. Basically, you want a circle, so place a nice salad bowl upside down to create a circular imprint and use kitchen scissors to cut the shape out. You can set aside the extra bits of bacon for other bacon-y goodness.

If you’ve never woven bacon (or a basket) before, this video will show you how to do it.”]

Next, you want to form the taco-like shape while it cooks in the barbecue. The video’s host uses a rib rack. If you don’t have that, you can try something like this to invert the bacon weave. Or roll it up like this so it’s more of a cylindrical shell. Barbecue the bacon for 20 minutes before flipping it around and cooking for another 20 minutes. In just 40 delicious-smelling minutes, you have a bacon taco shell to stuff with more bacon (if you want) and other taco fixings.

Alternatively, you can use the oven to cook it slightly faster. If you’re a bit more kilojoule conscious, you can swap with turkey bacon. Whatever your feelings toward such a bacon creation, it’s a tantalising idea for bacon lovers and those of you on a ketogenic, or very low-carb diet.

Eat your heart out, Taco Bell.
