Safety Alert: IKEA Recalls Finger-Trapping Beach Chairs

If you’re currently reading this from the comfort of your IKEA MYSINGSÖ outdoor beach chair, you might want to park your butt somewhere else: The ACCC has issued a safety recall due to an assembly defect that causes falls and “finger entrapments”. Here are the details.

The IKEA MYSINGSÖ outdoor beach chair is a foldable beach chair that retails in Australia for $39.99. It has been recalled due to an assembly issue that can cause the chair to unexpectedly collapse, resulting in injury to the sitter.

To date, IKEA has received five incident reports globally in which MYSINGSÖ beach chairs collapsed during use. All five reports included injuries to fingers and required medical attention. The issue affects all models sold before February 2017.

MYSINGSÖ owners are advised to return the chair to their nearest IKEA store for a full refund. (As IKEA is the sole retailer of the chair, proof of purchase is not required.) You can find more information about the recall at Product Safety Australia.
