Start A New Holiday Tradition To Turn Lonely Holidays Into Inspiring Ones

The holidays aren’t happy for everyone. Whether you don’t get along with your family, are far from home, or are missing a loved one, there are ways to turn the holidays into a special time. Here’s what we mean.

Kicking off a new holiday tradition can go a long way towards making December less lonely and turn it into a time that inspires you for the new year.

  • Treat Yourself: Refresh with some “me” time. Maybe a fancy dinner out, a spa day, fun solo trip, or a marathon of your favourite movies. Pick something you don’t get to do often but that you enjoy.
  • Bond with Friends: Traditions don’t have to just be for family, get together with your friends and start a tradition you can all look forward to every year. Some good options include ice skating, a holiday potluck and gift exchange, caroling, or volunteering.
  • Create Family Traditions: If your family doesn’t have many traditions, or you think it’s time to add some new ones, take the initiative to organise one this year. Perhaps a day outdoors, making a special family dish, or spending some time remembering a loved one.

No matter what your situation, the important thing is to figure out what makes a tradition meaningful to you (reflection, rejuvenation, connection, exposure to new ideas) and find an activity or event that matches, preferably one you can do every year.
