A Sleep Doctor’s Guide To Taking A Perfect Nap

Dr Janet Kennedy is a clinical psychologist and the founder of NYC Sleep Doctor, a service providing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to treat sleep disorders. In this video, Dr Kennedy explains how to get the most out of a nap; from the amount of time you should rest for to the best time of the day to partake.

The above video from Business Insider breaks down the basics of effective napping. As Dr Kennedy observes, introducing a nap to your daily routine can help keep you energised without resorting to stimulants like caffeine. The important thing is to pick the right time (generally before 3pm) and to limit your nap to no more than 40 minutes.

However, Kennedy cautions that napping isn’t for everybody. If you wake up feeling tired and groggy, you’re probably doing more harm than good. In these cases, you’re probably better off avoiding naps altogether and going to bed earlier.
