How Computer Screen Privacy Filters Work

Screen privacy filters are an easy way to keep snooping eyes from seeing what’s on your laptop monitor. If you’ve ever wondered how they work, this video reveals all.

If you’ve ever had vertical blinds in your home, you know that you can only see through them at a certain angle. As Linus explains in the video above from the Techquickie YouTube channel, screen privacy filters work the same way, but on a much smaller scale. The tiny blinds, or micro louver, built into the filter allow light to pass through straight on and not on the sides. This makes it so you can see what’s on your screen, but the weirdo next to you on the plane can’t. Some laptops even come with them built in now, where you can turn the filter effect on and off at will.

Screen privacy filters work pretty well, but nice ones aren’t cheap, especially if you have a large monitor. If you don’t want to spend somewhere between $50 and $200 on one, you could always build your own DIY privacy monitor.
