Clean And Freshen Your Pillows In Three Simple Steps

Clean And Freshen Your Pillows In Three Simple Steps

You bury your face in your pillows every night, so it’s a good idea to clean them every once in a while. Fortunately, it’s super easy to do. Just follow these three steps.

Pillows can pretty gross, especially when they get those nasty yellow stains. In this video from the Consumer Reports YouTube channel, home editor Dan DiClerico explains the easiest method for freshening up a standard pillow:

  1. Hang it up outside on a sunny, breezy day so it can air out first.
  2. Then throw it in the washing machine on the gentle cycle. Use warm water and a mild detergent.
  3. Lastly, hang it up to air dry or toss it in your dryer. If you put in the dryer, add some dry towels to speed up the drying process, and add some tennis balls so your pillow fluffs as it drys.

If you have down pillows, they’re better off being hand washed, but they can survive the spin cycle of your washing machine before being tossed in the dryer.

If you have a memory foam pillow, however, you can’t use your washer or dryer. You can still hang it up outside to air out, but if you need to wash it, you shouldn’t put it in your washing machine. Instead, Mary Marlowe Leverette at About Home recommends you soak it in a tub of lukewarm water and detergent, and gently squeeze the pillow to let the water and detergent move through the foam like a sponge. Then drain the soapy water and rinse the pillow several times with clear water before squeezing out the water and letting it air dry.
