Use A Soft Drink Can Tab As An Improvised Line Tensioner

Whether you’re setting up a tent, tarp, or even a hammock, you often need a tensioner to keep lines taut. If you’re in a pinch, you can make a simple one out of a can tab.

In this video, Grant Thompson shares a clever tip for replacing a lost or broken line tensioner while you’re out camping. First, remove the tab from a can of soft drink or beer. The key is to turn the tab around and push it into the mouth of the can so it stays intact. Then string the line through the part of the tab that swiveled when it was attached to the can. After you’ve got some line through, tie it to the other loop of the tab. Now you can hook the loop you have to stake or nail and pull it tight.
