It’s fairly easy to travel between most European countries, and you typically have a few options for transportation: Plane, train or bus. GoEuro’s Transport Price Index shows you the average price of each mode of transportation for 40 countries in Europe.

GoEuro is a booking site for transportation in Europe, and in their recent index, they analysed prices for millions of tickets sold on their website in the past year. They compiled their findings on an interactive chart that compares the average price per 100km for each mode of transportation, depending on the country.
As Travel + Leisure points out, there were three countries where flying was actually cheaper than taking a train — Switzerland (€29.73 [$44] vs €47.44 [$71]), France (€14.74 [$22] vs. €17.59 [$26]) and Spain (€12 [$18] vs. €13.74 [$20]). In Portugal, the average cost of a flight per 100km was the same as the average for taking a train — $12.
Bus prices are generally cheaper, of course, but that’s not always the case. In Finland, the average bus price was €13 ($19) per 100km, compared to €9 ($13) for the train. Here are some additional comparisons below, but be sure to check out GoEuro’s full chart at the link below for the full list of countries.
