Pokemon Go Big Update Lets You Walk Your Pokemon, Cracks Down On Cheaters

Pokemon Go has received a major update that adds the Buddy Pokemon system. The new feature lets trainers pick a Pokemon to walk around with them to earn Candy for levelling up. Here’s what you need to know.

Niantic, the creators of Pokemon Go has said it is in the process of rolling out the update. At the time of publication, the updates have yet to land in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

The Buddy Pokemon feature is going to be useful for players who are sick of catching the same Pokemon over and over again just to deconstruct them for Candy used for levelling up. Trainers will be able to choose only one Pokemon at a time to buddy up with. The Pokemon will follow the player around and candy will be earned depending on the distance walked.

Kotaku Australia has a full rundown of what to expect from the buddy system.

Niantic has also fixed a handful of issues with the update:

  • Made it easier to select smaller Pokémon on the screen.
  • Fixed an issue where Eggs would sometimes hatch without displaying the animation.
  • Improved performance reliability when a device switches networks to no longer cause the application to hang or stop updating.
  • Pokémon GO Plus support
  • Minor text fixes.

Niantic is continuing to crack down on cheaters on Pokemon Go and is working to eliminate bots and scrapers. The company also reiterated that rooted or jailbroken devices are not supported by the game.
