The Best Way To Construct An Unforgettable Hero Sandwich

The Best Way To Construct An Unforgettable Hero Sandwich

Video: Making a sandwich isn’t usually something that requires a tutorial, but after watching Bon Appetit’s guide to constructing the perfect hero, you might learn a few tips to take away for all of your sandwich creations.

Bon Appetit’s editor in chief, Adam Rapoport, starts with the bread and walks you through the best way to construct a hero — at least, in his opinion, and he acknowledges that people will have different ones (specifically his thoughts on mayo, which I personally agree with). Some of the stand out suggestions in the video though:

  • Think architecture more than layering. Drape your slices of meat across the sandwich instead of laying them all flat.
  • Use a good, simple shredded iceberg lettuce — it adds texture and crunch without being heavy.
  • Dress your salad — a little olive oil and vinaigrette adds flavour to that otherwise flavourless iceberg.

Of course, these rules aren’t universal for every type of sandwich — iceberg, for example, is by no means a requirement for every sandwich, or you might not want that dressed crunch in the centre of yours. That said, if you’re making a nice, tall hero like the one in the video, they’re good tips to follow. Hit play on the video above, or hit the link below to check it out at YouTube.
